Summary
The Head Coach will develop, implement, and promote a successful high school clay target program that emphasizes firearm safety, skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility. This position works directly with student-athletes to foster a safe and supportive environment that aligns with the mission and values of Hopkins High School, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), and the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League (MSHSCTL).
EssentialFunctions
- Plan, organize, and conduct practices and competitions.
- Provide instruction on safe firearm handling, shooting techniques, and competitive strategies appropriate for high school athletes.
- Promote and model sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and discipline both on and off the range.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, and team events.
- Oversee assistant coaches in managing equipment, uniforms, and range-related supplies.
- Support student-athlete academic performance and monitor eligibility requirements.
- Execute the promotion and recruitment of student-athletes for the clay target program.
- Maintain compliance with all Hopkins School District, MSHSL, MSHSCTL, and range safety rules and policies.
- Communicate effectively with the head coach, athletic director, athletes, parents, range staff, and school personnel.
- Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience- High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Previous clay target, trap, skeet, or shooting sports coaching/competitive experience preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in an educational or athletic setting is preferred.
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license.
- Current MSHSL coaching certification (or ability to obtain prior to season start).
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Firearm safety certification and compliance with all state and range-specific safety requirements.
- Rules, safety standards, and fundamentals of clay target sports.
- Principles of shooting form, accuracy, and equipment care.
- MSHSL, MSHSCTL, and district athletic policies and procedures.
- Child development and positive coaching strategies.
- Equity, inclusion, and cultural competency in athletics.
- Ability to teach and demonstrate safe firearm handling and clay target techniques effectively.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with athletes, parents, staff, and range officials.
- Ability to motivate and mentor student-athletes.
- Organizational skills for managing practices, equipment, and competitions.
- Ability to enforce rules and maintain discipline respectfully and fairly.
The position requires mobility to work at an outdoor shooting range, stamina to actively demonstrate shooting techniques, conduct practices, and stand for extended periods of time. The coach must have the strength to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, including firearms, ammunition, and gear. Adequate vision and hearing are necessary to ensure safe participation and observe athlete performance. Effective speech and communication are required to give clear direction in a live range environment.
WorkingEnvironment
- Work is performed primarily at an outdoor shooting range.
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise from firearms, and varying temperatures.
- Evening and weekend hours are required during the season.
- Travel to away competitions, tournaments, and events is required.
75 days total. Stipend range: $1,500 - $3,200. Position-specific benefits information is available. Union Contracts, Position Handbook/Agreements are located.
