Overview

Performs sewer line cleaning for the City sewers, responding to emergency sewer stoppages at citizens  properties. Assists the Utility Inspector with citizen s requests, Public Works, plumbers and contractors to help locate sewer lines, dye testing, smoke testing and CCTV inspections.

Responsibilities
  • Operate the Vactor and the Jet trucks and equipment during sewer line cleaning, sewer stoppages and sewer backups.
  • Maintain documentation records for line cleaning and sewer stoppages using the City GIS.
  • Perform routine maintenance on the Vactor and Jet trucks and assist with pump station maintenance when needed.
  • Conduct smoke and dye testing of sewer lines.
  • Assist the Utility Inspector with CCTV work using the crawler camera or the push camera.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ability to read, write and understand oral/written instructions in English and at least 6 months of experience in a sewer-related position.
  • Ability to read sewer maps and GIS.
  • High school diploma preferred.
  • Maintenance skills on pumps a plus.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Commercial Driver s License B with Tank endorsement.
  • VA DOT work zone traffic control certification within six months of hire.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of equipment used in the assigned unit.
  • Knowledge of work methods and techniques.
  • Must have knowledge of traffic safety, as most work will be performed in the public right-of-way.
Skills
  • Skill in driving vehicles and operating equipment.
  • Basic computer skills.
Abilities
  • Requires the ability to lift and move heavy objects, e.g. removing and replacing manhole lids, removing and connecting pipe sections to and from the Vactor suction line.
  • The ability to work independently and as a team with limited supervision.
  • Must be able to communicate problems as maintenance is performed.
Other Requirements
  • Must be available to work on-call on a rotating basis to respond to emergencies such as sewer stoppages and minor repairs after regular work hours.
Work Environment
  • Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme noise, odors, heights, dust, fumes, and hazardous materials such as oil, coolants, gasoline, hydraulic fluid, and raw sewage.
Essential Physical Activities
  • Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.
  • If job requires frequent lifting, typical weight handled: up to 75 lbs.
