Hoover & Strong seeks a machinist to make, repair, and improve a variety of tools that enable the production of approximately 20,000 small parts for our customers, including jewelry, contract castings, findings, mill products and eco‑friendly metal refining. These may include dies, jigs, fixtures, clamps or molds to produce a more robust part that meets the specification of the customer. This role requires the practical application of good manufacturing practices and organizational skills.
The ideal candidate possesses excellent interpersonal skills and an aptitude for hands‑on problem solving.
Primary
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of manual machining experience, specifically Bridgeport or Trak mill style.
- Able to read and use inspection tools instruments (i.e.: rulers, gauges, micrometers, indicator, calipers, etc.), as well as interpret Blueprints.
- Intermediate computer skills in Windows, Office, directory navigation, and file management including creating file naming conventions that are easy to navigate.
- Must be punctual and reliable; achieves results even when confronted with conflicting responsibilities and limited resources
- Must work well with coworkers using both written and verbal communication. Will usually voice their opinions and ideas when problem‑solving to formulate the best path forward.
- Ability to learn, understand and adhere to established policies and procedures.
- Maintains high ethics. Is respectful and honest. Is caring, friendly and willing to share knowledge and expertise.
- Will be required to perform specific tasks that involve standing, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, squatting, kicking or kneeling.
- Must be able to lift with or without mechanical aids on a recurring basis (up to 45 lbs.).
- Work is performed within a production environment, subject to temperature variations, chemicals, mechanical parts, increased noise levels and dust.
- Must have 20/20 distance vision with or without the use of aids such as glasses or contact lenses.
Primary Responsibilities:
Machinist: 80%
- Interpret CAD drawing, prints, and job orders to determine dimensions and machine set‑up; certify work against blueprints.
- Be able to set up, operate, inspect, repair and maintain all aspects of various machining and grinding equipment such as manual mills, manual lathes, and manual surface grinders to machine or grind components to precise specifications.
- Build/modify various prototypes/production molds, dies, and miscellaneous tooling.
- Other duties as assigned.
Quality Control / Documentation – 20%
- Verify conformance of finished work pieces to specifications using precision‑measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, comparators, etc.
- Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions to management.
- Work with the 6S system to maintain the shop including performing quality checks or inspections, together with required charting.
- Write quality SOP and work instructions that are easy to read and understand.
Compensation: $52,000 to $56,160 per year
