Position: FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM SPECIALIST - TEMPORARY PART-TIME - HILO, HAWAII ISLAND

Salary: $28.62 to $34.86 per hour (SR-20, Step D to I).

Note: Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits afforded to an employee in a permanent position with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction‑in‑force.

Responsibilities

Conduct foster grandparents program activities in a participating agency; supervise foster grandparents; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Work involves supervising foster grandparent volunteers in relation to their services in educational settings where they tutor and mentor students. This includes selecting, orienting, training and assigning foster grandparent volunteers to school settings on the basis of probable compatibility and/or special needs, and the assessment of the program in meeting the basic objectives which are: (1) to provide volunteer opportunities for individuals aged 55 years and older, and (2) to render supportive person‑to‑person services to students in educational settings.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

LEGAL AUTHORIZATION TO WORK

The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Experience and Training Requirement
  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible administrative, professional, or analytical work experience which provided knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those acquired while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree. Two (2) of the six (6) years of professional experience must have provided applicants with a knowledge of human and social problems and behavior and techniques of dealing effectively with people in groups and/or individually.
  • Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience which provided applicants with a knowledge of human and social problems and behavior and techniques of dealing effectively with people in groups and/or individually.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in social work, human behavior or a social science which specialized in the problems and characteristics of the aged.
Knowledge and Abilities Required

Knowledge of: Current social, economic, and community needs of older persons and children including childhood development and education; and organizations and networks serving older adults and children.

Ability to: Understand and apply pertinent Federal and State laws, rules and regulations; demonstrate the ability to learn to supervise foster grandparents; effectively work and communicate with program staff, volunteers, and community members; analyze complex challenges and develop action plans; accordingly, and prepare clear and concise reports.

Driver's License

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
