Overview
Lead Water Plant Maintenance Mechanics supervise and perform the installation, repair, maintenance and overhaul of pumping plant and related water systems equipment for the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Water System Operations Division. Two positions are available in Honolulu.
What You Will Do- Supervise and perform installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of pumping plant and water system equipment, machinery, and instrumentation.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for mechanical and electrical equipment failures, using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve issues.
- Oversee and conduct dismantling, servicing, and repair of various valve systems.
- Supervise and perform installation, maintenance, overhaul, and repair of electrical and electronic devices.
- Work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
- Work with high voltage electricity, heavy machinery, chlorine gas, moving machinery, and working on scaffolds.
- Equipment may be located underground in basements, manholes, vaults, shafts, and pump rooms; above ground on building and reservoir roofs; and remote locations which may require walking or working on uneven terrain.

Experience and QualificationsExperience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show demonstrated competence in performing the journey level duties of a Water Plant Maintenance Mechanic. Examples of qualifying experience include roles such as Airplane Mechanic, Fleet/Auto Mechanic, Heavy Construction Equipment Mechanic, Machinist, Pumping Plant Mechanic, Industrial Plant Mechanic, Power Plant Mechanic, and Millwright.
- Must be able to apply tools, materials, and maintenance practices used in repairing electrically operated pumps, motors, chlorinators, altitude valves, cone valves, and pressure-reducing valves.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical defects in pumping plant equipment and related systems.
- Use machine shop tools and equipment including drill presses, cutters, grinders, pipe threaders, welding equipment, and sanders.
- Plan, assign, and review the work of staff while promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
- Read meters and gauges, record data, and maintain operational records.
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license (automobile/Type
3), prior to appointment.
