Our Client is the largest privately owned shipyard in Hawaii, with two of the largest dry docks in the state. Our client has been in business since 1944 and have a large labor force of skilled craftsman with a full support staff of professionals who comprise of engineering, project management, QA, EHS, accounting, contracts, and human resources.
Job Summary
The Project Managers report to the Vice President of Programs and are responsible for the management and execution of commercial and military ship repair contracts ranging up to $100M in value. The ideal candidates thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with full responsibility for the successful outcome of his/her project. Thorough understanding of ships and ship systems is mandatory.
- Must be an excellent communicator and leader to establish and maintain working relationships with different stakeholders, including owners, managers, estimators, engineers, subcontractors, supervisors, and production workers.
- Must have experience and knowledge of government contracts, estimating methods, project scheduling, and be comfortable negotiating contract changes with the customer.
- Must have experience onboard ships as well as experience with traditional marine engineering and shipboard equipment.
- The Project Manager will need to read and understand complex work specifications, diagrams, blueprints, technical manuals, test procedures, and NAVSEA Standard Items.
- Must be knowledgeable of Project Management principles such as scheduling and work sequencing, risk management, performance management, earned value, and change management.
- Must be effective in scheduling and coordinating multiple resources such as labor, equipment, material, and subcontract support.
- Must be capable of leading daily and weekly meetings with all stakeholders ranging from executive management to customers.
- These meetings may include production meetings, weekly progress meetings, conferences, and formal reviews.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience is recommended for the PM-I position, yet exceptions are often granted based on individual performance.
- Manage smaller ship repair projects ranging in the $100k-$1M range and often requires support from other departments to function effectively.
- The PM-I position often looks to the Senior Project Manager or other leadership positions for guidance, yet is given the authority to run his or her project semi-autonomously.
- Must have knowledge and experience using MS Office products and be capable of interacting with the customer with minor oversight, including minor contract negotiations.
- Understanding of general financial project management is a requirement.
- A college degree mandatory, or equivalent experience considered.
- A PMP or similar certification is desirable.
