POSITION SUMMARY

The Custodian performs heavy janitorial work concentrating on cleaning and upkeep of Chaminade University buildings and surrounding areas. Primary duties are custodial, grounds keeping, and setting up for events, as well as assisting maintenance personnel when required.

Indirect Report: Assistant Director of Facilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Custodial (35% of work time)

  • Perform heavy manual janitorial tasks to clean furnishing and building common areas (interior and exterior).
  • Perform routine maintenance on janitorial equipment.
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpets as required.
  • Clean, sweep, scrub, mop, dust, and wax floors, windows, walls, woodwork, fixtures, rugs, restrooms and other facilities.
  • Dispose of trash and waste materials.
  • Remove litter in and around buildings.
  • Lift and move furniture, sofas, beds, mattresses, office furniture, etc.
  • Use heavy‑duty industrial power operated equipment.

Grounds keeping (30% of work time)

  • Perform tree and hedge trimming, cut grass, repair irrigation systems.
  • Power wash walkways, remove litter, rake or use a leaf blower, sweep streets, walkways, stairs, etc.
  • Fertilize as required, prune, trim, water, and maintain the Chaminade grounds.

Set‑ups (30% of work time)

  • Set‑up tents, tables, chairs, lighting, and whatever is required for events on and off campus.
  • Break down event set‑ups after the event is over and return all equipment to storage. Clean up area.
  • Occasionally work overtime to accommodate special events.

Miscellaneous (5% of work time)

  • Assist maintenance crew with their work when needed.
  • Perform summer maintenance work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: High School Graduate preferred
Experience: Some experience preferred

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Skills: Must speak English and be able to interact cordially with students, faculty and staff of the university. Must have valid State of Hawaii driver’s license.
Technical

Skills:

Some maintenance skills preferred.
Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • This is a full time, non-exempt position. Forty hours per week (M‑F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Principal Grant Investigator.
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.
