OverviewThe Industrial Hygienist working for the Hawaii Department of Health is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling potential health hazards in workplaces (healthcare facilities, hospitals, clinics, research laboratories, etc.). The industrial hygienist must have specialized training in the unique conditions of hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Healthcare industrial hygienists are trained and experienced in dealing with air quality, isolation rooms, water treatment, waste disposal and biological waste management.
Because of this unique position, they can examine the role of the environment in hospital-acquired infections, both individual cases and outbreaks, as well as mitigate infection risk through changes to the built environment.
- Serves as lead liaison for construction, renovation, demolition, and general maintenance in healthcare and other facilities to reduce the potential risk of exposure and transmission of infectious organisms and other harmful exposures to patients, visitors, staff and community.
- Serves as lead liaison for water management concerns.
- Provides expertise in mitigating workplace hazards related to patient and employee safety.
- Conduct facility assessments to identify potential health hazards such as chemical exposures, noise levels, ergonomics issues, and biological agents.
- Utilize sampling techniques and best practices to measure exposure levels of airborne contaminants, noise, and other physical stressors.
- Analyze data collected to assess worker health risks and determine compliance with industrial hygiene standards.
- Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified hazards, such as engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) utilizing best practices.
- Provide technical guidance to employers on hazard control measures and best practices for worker health protection.
- Stay updated on relevant industrial hygiene safety and health regulations regarding infectious diseases (e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines).
- Ensure compliance with biohazard safety protocols and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with facility (healthcare or other) occupational health teams to facilitate compliance with health regulations when necessary.
- Develop and deliver training programs for employers and workers on industrial hygiene health hazards and safety practices.
- Disseminate information on industrial hygiene best practices through publications, workshops, and presentations.
- Monitor emerging trends in industrial hygiene hazards and identify areas for further investigation
- Analyze data from workplace inspections and exposure monitoring to identify patterns and inform policy development
- Specific responsibilities may vary depending on the size and structure of the facility, as well as the state or region's specific industrial hygiene health needs.
- Perform other duties as relates to job.
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health, or a related science field
- Possession of a valid Hawaii driver’s license; or ability to obtain a Hawaii driver’s license within forty-five (45) days of hire.
- Strong understanding of industrial hygiene health regulations and standards.
- Proficiency in sampling and analytical techniques for measuring workplace exposures.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A minimum of one (1) year of professional industrial experience as Assistant Industrial Hygienist or higher, which must have included professional industrial hygiene activities including either hazardous materials management or identification, evaluation, and control of industrial health hazards, such as noise, water, radiation, asbestos, various chemicals.
- Experience developing and implementing facility-level water-management plans in healthcare or other settings.
- Experience in indoor air quality analysis.
- Experience in public health, consulting, manufacturing, or the construction design build field.
- Experience in the use of computer databases, pivot tables, word processing, and report writing.
* Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene as a Certified Industrial Hygienist in the comprehensive practice of Industrial Hygiene may be substituted for the required education and experience.
