Job Summary
:
Performs chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Applies techniques used in fields of microbiology, histopathology, hematology, diagnostic immunology, immunohematology, chemistry, or morphological examinations.
- Conduct laboratory testing and initiate and implement a course of action based upon standard operating procedures.
- Organize workflow to achieve efficient and accurate output; review and verify results for accuracy and credibility prior to release; record and report results in a timely manner.
- Problem‑solve to achieve acceptable test results and ensure optimal system and instrument operations.
- Interpret and verify lab findings concerning specimen type, quality, clinical information, and other laboratory data.
- Analyze and evaluate each testing process to assure final results are valid and accurate; maintain and update technical knowledge through meetings, continuing education, and in‑service instructions.
- Assist in developing operational procedures to ensure effective workflow.
- Serve as a resource for automated and other equipment; coordinate laboratory operations in the absence of a supervisor.
- Ensure compliance with Quality Control and Quality Assurance Programs; address quality of service issues and implement internal quality assurance monitors or projects.
- Take corrective action to resolve problems; review unresolved problems with a supervisor; report action limit results according to standard procedures.
- Serve as testing personnel for CLIA §88 high‑complexity testing and perform specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of test results, following laboratory policies and procedures.
- Perform proficiency testing and report results.
- Advises providers and nursing staff on correct procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing; assist providers in determining appropriate laboratory services for patient care.
- Assist in training new technologist employees and technical students.
- Assist in developing and reviewing technical procedures and training documents.
- Detect and repair subtle instrument or reagent problems.
