Overview

APR Consulting, Inc. has been engaged to identify a Pharmacy Technician - Oncology & Home Infusion for a temporary crisis staffing opportunity for a possible upcoming strike.

Location:

Honolulu, HI or Maui, HI (travel and accommodation are provided)

Open to work from October 1 – October 31, 2025

Pharmacy Manager or Pharmacist-in-Charge

Job Summary

The Oncology and Home Infusion Pharmacy Technician is a specialized role responsible for providing comprehensive technical support in the preparation and dispensing of medications for patients undergoing oncology treatment and receiving home infusion therapy. This role requires a high degree of precision, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of sterile compounding techniques. The ideal candidate will be a compassionate and organized professional with experience in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Medication Preparation & Dispensing:
    Prepare and compound sterile and non-sterile medications, including chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies, and other oncology-related drugs, in a cleanroom environment (e.g., ISO Class 7 and ISO Class 5 compounding areas).
  • Utilize aseptic technique to accurately measure, mix, and prepare complex sterile IV admixtures for home infusion, such as TPN, antibiotics, pain management, and hydration solutions.
  • Ensure all preparations are made in strict compliance with USP 797 and 800 standards, as well as state and federal regulations.
  • Accurately pull, stage, and label medications and supplies for patient-specific orders.
  • Perform calculations to verify dosages and concentrations.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Inventory and Supply Management:
    Manage and maintain inventory of oncology and home infusion medications and supplies, including expensive and specialty drugs.
  • Monitor expiration dates and rotate stock to minimize waste.
  • Order and receive supplies from vendors, reconciling invoices and tracking inventory in the pharmacy system.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of hazardous drugs in a segregated area.
Patient and Administrative Support
  • Assist pharmacists in coordinating medication deliveries and shipments to patients' homes.
  • Communicate with patients and caregivers to confirm delivery schedules and answer basic questions regarding their therapy, under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including medication profiles and compounding logs.
  • Process and verify prescription orders, ensuring all required information is complete and accurate before pharmacist review.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team (e.g., nurses, physicians) to ensure seamless patient care.
Compliance and Quality Control
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities, including environmental monitoring, equipment cleaning, and documentation review.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of PPE when handling hazardous drugs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve compounding equipment issues under the guidance of a pharmacist or manager.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification:
    Active Pharmacy Technician certification (e.g., PTCB or NHA);
    State-specific license/registration as required.
  • Experience:

    Minimum 2-3 years as a pharmacy technician in hospital, home infusion, or specialty pharmacy; sterile compounding and handling of hazardous drugs; knowledge of USP 797 and 800.
  • Skills:

    Attention to detail, math and dosage calculations, proficiency with pharmacy software (e.g., CPR+, Pioneer Rx, QS/1), communication, teamwork, patient safety commitment.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Ability to stand for long periods; manual dexterity; lift up to 25 lbs; comfortable in cleanroom and PPE.
