- Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
- Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
- Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
- Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and makes recommendations.
- Understands the Company’s Policies, Mission, Vision, Values, and follows the culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company.
- Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
- Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric.
Basic Qualifications:
- A BS degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
- Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years’ relevant engineering experience.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, and ability to learn additional software tools to perform work.
- Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
- Working knowledge of Safe Start principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
Skills and Experience Requirements:
- Good leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communications skills and interpersonal skills, in order to work effectively with all levels of the company, with outside contractors and consultants, governmental agencies, community groups and customers.
- Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues. Ability to handle such issues with professionalism while using tact, courtesy and discretion.
- Ability to do in-depth analytical and administrative skills for such tasks as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints, conflicting priorities.
- Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license to conduct on-site surveys/inspections of projects. Must meet the requirements for required driving positions as stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Company Drivers policy.
- Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities. Experience must be in a specific and relevant area of expertise.
The hiring range for the Engineer I [Req ] position is $78,000.00 to $99,600.00.
