The Department of Environmental Services (ENV), Wastewater Treatment & Disposal Division, is seeking an experienced Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV! This full‑time, permanent role, located in Ewa, involves monitoring and operating the island‑wide wastewater pumping and treatment facilities through the Supervisory Control and Data (SCADA) system while following all safety rules to protect staff and the public.

What

You Will Do
  • Monitor and operate the Supervisory Control and Data (SCADA) System to oversee island‑wide wastewater pumping and treatment facilities and ensure continuous, safe operations.
  • Make critical operational decisions during emergencies by adjusting pumps, treatment processes, and equipment remotely when immediate action is required.
  • Ensure regulatory and policy compliance by monitoring system data to confirm wastewater operations meet Department policies and Federal/DOH requirements.
  • Provide leadership during emergency situations by guiding and supervising operators when supervisors are unavailable or until relieved.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors and staff by reporting system changes, operational issues, and facility conditions in real time.
  • Respond to public and operational concerns after hours by handling inquiries and complaints and dispatching maintenance or operations personnel as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
Special Working Conditions
  • Work schedule is twenty‑four hours, seven days a week, with rotating shifts.
  • May be exposed to active machinery, high voltages, toxic or hazardous gases, and unpleasant working conditions.
  • This role will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.

Education Requirement

Graduation from high school or equivalent satisfactory to the State Board of Certification of Operating Personnel in Wastewater Plants.

Experience Requirement

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of the applicable position.

Must Be Able To
  • Operate and maintain wastewater treatment and pumping equipment.
  • Understand different types of wastewater and how they are treated.
  • Collect samples and perform basic physical and chemical tests.
  • Work safely around high‑voltage equipment and moving machinery.
  • Monitor treatment processes and take action during equipment problems or emergencies.
  • Operate electrical pumps and related equipment.
  • Read meters and gauges, record information, and keep accurate records.
  • Respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
License/Certificate Requirement
  • Current (Grade IV) Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate, which has been issued by The Board of Certification of Operating Personnel in Wastewater Treatment Facilities.
