Engineer IV, V – Construction Management Section
Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is hiring in the Construction Management Section. The authorized level is Engineer V, but applications are also being accepted for Engineer IV if recruiting difficulties arise.
Salary RangeSalary ranges are estimates of total compensation and may vary based on experience, qualifications, and budget availability.
- Engineer IV (EN‑24): $8,289.00 – $10,580.00 per month
- Engineer V (EN‑26): $8,951.00 – $11,427.00 per month
- Serve as a technical expert in a specialized area or program function, perform staff advisory, consulting and reviewing duties, and work with a staff of specialists in long‑range planning, research, and development of specific projects, programs and functions.
- Supervisory positions: review projects received, plan methods of approach, assign work to supervised employees, keep informed on latest developments in the area of specialization, advise supervised employees on current data, solve engineering problems referred for help, ensure coordination with related projects, review technical reports, and prepare budget estimates for major and long‑range projects.
- Perform personnel management functions such as selecting employees, evaluating performance, taking disciplinary action, training new employees, and initiating and preparing technical reports and correspondence.
- Graduation from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university. For some positions, a degree in physics, mathematics or chemistry may be acceptable if the applicant has at least 15 credits in engineering sciences common to all engineering disciplines (e.g., thermodynamics, statics, electrical science, applied mechanics, engineering drawing, strength of materials).
- Administrative, professional or technical experience involving the application of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering sciences comparable to a bachelor's degree in engineering.
- A combination of college training in engineering and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in engineering.
- For Engineer IV: 3 years of supervisory or staff advisory experience, 0 years of administrative experience, total 3 years of experience.
- For Engineer V: 4 years of supervisory or staff advisory experience (or supervisory potential), 0 years of administrative experience, total 4 years of experience. At least one year of experience must be comparable to the next lower level.

Experience:
Progressively responsible professional engineering requiring the application of basic and engineering sciences to solve theoretical or practical problems.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering may substitute one year of engineering experience.
- Supervisory, staff advisory, or administrative experience may substitute for engineering experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Excess supervisory, staff advisory, or administrative experience may substitute for each other on a year‑for‑year basis.
Applicants for Engineer IV and higher must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer.
Driver's License RequirementApplicants must have a current, valid driver’s license.
Supplemental InformationThe advertised salary reflects full‑time employment and includes potential shortage and school‑year differentials. Current employees will be placed according to department regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
RequirementsAll applicants must meet the requirements for the position they are applying for as of the application date. Education and experience must not be gained concurrently unless specifically indicated. Experience calculations are based on full‑time, 40‑hour workweeks; part‑time experience is prorated.
