The Physical Education (PE) program at Hanahau‘oli School is fundamental to the school’s mission, emphasizing the holistic development of the child. The PE program is designed to provide children with all abilities and interests with a foundation of movement experiences that support living an active and healthy lifestyle. The goal is to introduce students through age‑appropriate motor skill development, understanding movement patterns, regular participation in physical activities, and fitness knowledge to build life‑long habits to be physically literate and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Aligning with Hanahau‘oli’s progressive philosophy, the PE program is grounded in movement education, guided discovery, and experiential learning, focusing on the process of learning “through doing” (“joyous work”) when encountering and mastering new and diverse challenges.
- Curriculum Design and Delivery:
Plan and deliver a developmentally appropriate, integrated, and experiential Physical Education curriculum for children in JK through 6th grade that promotes the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and ethical dimensions of learning (a holistic approach). - Alignment to Progressive Philosophy:
Utilize a movement education approach, integrating guided discovery, problem‑solving, and exploratory techniques, to achieve individualized learning in physical education methods consistent with progressive education principles. - Movement and Skill Instruction:
Be able to analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic fundamental movement skills, motor development, knowledge, and strategies as related to the development of lead‑up activities for traditional, non‑traditional and created games/routines, team building, rhythmic activities and tumbling skills. Provide developmentally appropriate fitness knowledge and instruction. - Facilitate Inclusive Learning:
Engage students in physical activity while teaching proper movement patterns, adapting exercises to individual capabilities through progressions and regressions, and ensuring maximum and inclusive participation for all students. - Classroom Management:
Create a safe, supportive, and movement‑based learning environment where students feel comfortable with trying and making mistakes. Provide appropriate safety instruction and make regular safety checks on equipment and field areas. - Assessment and Evaluation:
Establish standards of student performance based on an understanding of the continuum of growth, respecting a child’s developmental level. Maintain complete and accurate records of each student’s development, assessing fitness and social and emotional development, and prepare progress reports. - Cross‑Curricular
Collaboration:
As a teaching specialist, work as part of a cooperative and diverse team of educators, and integrate the PE program with classroom curricula when relevant and enriching to offer students a rich, thematic program. - Mission & Guiding Beliefs Alignment:
Systematically integrate moral and social values such as honesty, discipline, responsibility, cooperation, and sportsmanship into physical education learning activities through teamwork, modified games, modeling, and reflection. - Professional Conduct:
Demonstrate professionalism through reliability, attention to detail, punctuality, and ensuring appropriate confidentiality. Participate in ongoing training and professional development. - Community Partnership:
Foster a cooperative and respectful partnership with families. Strive to involve parents and the community in activities (e.g., fun walks or mini‑tournaments) to reinforce values taught in school. - School Duties:
Fulfill normal duties outside of the classroom (e.g., recess and lunch supervision, car duty, committee work, faculty meetings, etc.).
- Education:
Bachelor’s Degree (preferably Master’s) in Physical Education, Exercise Science, or a related field. - Experience:
Minimum 3 - 5 years of teaching physical education as a lead teacher in an early childhood or elementary setting, preferably in a progressive learning environment. - Skills:
