Punahou School is currently recruiting a passionate and dynamic teacher to join our Summer Sustainability Fellowship Program, aimed at inspiring and educating the next generation of environmental leaders. As a Teacher for this program, you will have the unique opportunity to engage and empower students in exploring sustainability concepts, environmental stewardship, and fostering a deep connection with the natural world. This position is a seasonal role, running during the summer months, with a focus on providing an enriching educational experience for high school students.
PrimaryResponsibilities
- Curriculum Development:
Work with the program director to implement and improve a comprehensive curriculum that introduces students to sustainability principles, systems thinking, and in applying concepts and values of Hawaiʻiʻs indigenous knowledge to today’s challenges. - Instruction:
Deliver engaging and interactive lessons, workshops, and outdoor activities that inspire curiosity and critical thinking related to sustainability. - Provide clear explanations, facilitate discussions, and encourage active participation among students.
- Field Trips and Experiential Learning:
Organize and lead field trips to local ecosystems, sustainable initiatives, and environmental organizations to provide students with hands‑on learning experiences and real‑world applications of sustainability concepts. - Project-Based Learning:
Encourage students to collaborate on group projects, research, and presentations focused on sustainability challenges and solutions, fostering creativity and problem‑solving skills. - Mentoring:
Provide guidance and support to students as they work on individual research projects and assist them in setting and achieving their academic and personal goals. - Assessment and Feedback:
Implement assessments to evaluate students’ understanding of sustainability topics and provide constructive feedback to help them improve their knowledge and skills. - Communication:
Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, and program administrators, keeping them informed about students’ progress and any program‑related updates. - Safety:
Prioritize the safety of students during outdoor activities and ensure adherence to program safety protocols and guidelines.

- School Year:
Summer School 2026, June – July, Dates may vary depending on the course - Work Hours:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM, Hours may vary depending on course - Stipend Range*: $3,473 - $8,871 - Compensation is commensurate with qualifications
- Punahou School offers a comprehensive total rewards program that includes competitive pay. Pay for selected candidates will be determined by various factors such as knowledge, skills, abilities, relevant training and experience, and internal equity.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- One (1) year of teaching experience required. Three (3) years of teaching experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of sustainability concepts, climate change, conservation, and environmental stewardship.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and engage students in meaningful discussions and activities.
- Enthusiasm for the outdoors and a willingness to lead field trips and outdoor activities.
- Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic educational environment.
- Passion for sustainability and a commitment to fostering an understanding of and passion for environmental stewardship.
- Teaching certification or relevant credentials.
- Experience in project-based learning and curriculum development.
- Knowledge of local environmental resources, organizations, and initiatives.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
