Conditions:

Contingent on course offerings and student demand, to begin approximately Fall 2026, pending position clearance, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. The position may be converted from 11 to 9 months or 9 to 11 months based on operational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, teach assigned Japanese language courses including design, delivery, and assessment in terms of student-learning outcomes; develop and/or update course content and materials and teaching and assessment strategies and methods to improve student attainment of learning outcomes, address the learning needs of the college's diverse students, integrate thinking and writing skills into course content where appropriate, and use technology and multimedia resources to support instruction.
  • Plan, organize, and independently carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  • Prepare course syllabi and maintain office hours for academic advising and for conferring with students about course work (one office hour per week per three-credit class).
  • Regular workload may include in-person and online, evening and weekend classes, continuing-education classes, distance-education classes, and teaching at off-campus sites.
  • Non-teaching duties include working collegially to provide service to the department and college, engaging in public service related to one's professional status and/or expertise, engaging in professional development, and engaging in professional or scholarly activities related to one's discipline or teaching.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Japanese, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:

  • Master’s degree in Japanese (language or literature); OR
  • Master’s degree in Japanese as a Second Language; OR
  • Master’s degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Japanese; OR
  • Master’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with a minimum of 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Japanese literature, Japanese culture, or any combination thereof.

Note: Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Evidence of experience integrating speaking, writing, technology and thinking skills in the teaching of the Japanese language;
  • Successful teaching at the post-secondary level as substantiated by student and peer assessments;
  • Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers, department chairs, and administrators;
  • Successful use of technology to support in person, online synchronous, and online asynchronous teaching modalities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its open-door and multicultural populations;
  • Ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects, including setting specific objectives and measuring results;
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop Japanese literature and/or culture courses;
  • Familiarity with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.
