Special funds, to begin approximately February 2026, pending position clearance, availability of funds, program needs, and satisfactory performance.
- Serves as assistant teacher in the preschool room working with children ages 2.5-5 years old, and/or caregiver in infant or toddler rooms with children 3 months - 3 years old in early childhood education labs on community college campuses on Oahu.
- Helps to ensure that the program aligns with the content and processes of Honolulu Community College's instructional program for early childhood education students.
- Models appropriate practitioner behavior for early childhood education students.
- Keeps abreast of appropriate State of Hawaii child care licensing rules and regulations and maintains standards at all times.
- Keeps abreast of and maintains accreditation standards for the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and participates in the accreditation process.
- Administers the food service program to meet all state regulatory and USDA requirements.
- With guidance of lead teaching team and/or site coordinator, provides regular training for staff on food service and USDA procedures and requirements.
- Assists in the maintenance of a healthy, safe and well-organized learning environment.
- Assists lead teacher and lead caregivers (working with children between 3 months through 5 years of age), in establishing and maintaining a developmentally appropriate program for children.
- Assists Preschool Lead Teacher and/or Infant/Toddler Lead Caregiver in daily routines, transitions, planning and conducting of age-appropriate individual and group curriculum activities based upon most current knowledge of child development/best practices.
- Utilizes child management and guidance techniques in keeping with established principles of child development.
- Helps to maintain communication with the families of children enrolled in the children’s program and in providing opportunities for their involvement in the program activities.
- Assists in informing families of program policies and procedures and assists with family conferences to discuss children’s progress.
- Maintains program records as directed; e.g., attendance, meal counts, child observation and assessment, etc.
- Participates in staff meetings, staff development activities, attends events and workshops or other activities.
- Functions as substitute teacher in preschool/toddler/infant classrooms when Lead Preschool Teacher, Lead Infant/Toddler Caregiver is unavailable or out of the room. Supervises; takes charge of the classroom when lead teaching staff is not present.
- Works with lead teaching staff and assists with staff scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage in each classroom throughout the semester.
- Supervise and mentor classroom staff (student aides) in appropriate child guidance practices, classroom planning and preparation, child observation practices, and overall supervision of children to assure health and safety.
- Assists in requesting of materials and supplies, coordination of maintenance of facility, repair/replacement of equipment as needed for program operation.
- Assists lead teacher and/or lead caregiver as well as site coordinator in making recommendations for referrals to appropriate agencies when additional services are needed.
