Overview
This position is located in the Military and Family Support Center (MFSC), Joint Base Pearl Harbor - Hickam, Navy Region Hawaii. The primary purpose of the Prevention & Education Specialist is to plan, implement, and administer prevention and education services/programs to active-duty members and family in developing effective life skills that will enhance their ability to deal with personal and relationship issues in a new, stressful or unfamiliar environment.
Responsibilities- Direct Service Delivery:
Serves as a non-clinical trainer/educator and is responsible for the delivery of a wide variety of education services to MFSC customers in a group or classroom setting. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
Stress Management, Anger Management, Communication Skills, Assertiveness training, Parenting Skills, Suicide Awareness/Prevention, and new Spouse Orientation. - Provides Deployment Support programming (including Return & Reunion Workshops), support for families of deployed personnel, Ombudsman and Key Spouse support, emergency case management in support of crisis response efforts, when needed.
- Serves as the primary education specialist and training coordinator for the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) including planning and implementing FAP command training for all commands within the MFSC area of responsibility at least annually.
- Provides FAP prevention and educational services on the FAP, spouse/intimate partner abuse, child abuse and neglect, risk factors and support services.
- Provides FAP Senior Leadership training initially within 90 days of assuming command and annually thereafter.
- Conducts annual family violence prevention and education for key responders and child development center staff.
- Ensures family violence prevention and education programs are provided with sufficient frequency to ensure that all of the following groups are trained: COs, XOs, FAP Command POCs, senior enlisted personnel, CRC/IDC, service members, chaplains, childcare and youth activities staff, installation law enforcement, medical staff and MFSC personnel.
- Ensures FAP awareness and prevention education briefs and workshops include at a minimum: the dynamics of child and domestic abuse, reporting requirements, the FAP, victim sensitivity and support, and the importance of community coordination.
- Provides Operational Stress Control information during educational programs and services whenever feasible and practical.
- Provides Operational Stress Control briefs/workshops using standardized curriculum.
- Provides Operation Prepare, or similar training, to military personnel and family members instructing them on how to prepare for disasters; what to do before, during and after an emergency.
- Trains family members in the use of the Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System.
- Participates in promoting and marketing family preparedness during installation Disaster Preparedness Campaigns and exercises.
- Provides and coordinates public awareness and prevention campaigns and programs in support of National Child Abuse Prevention, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Month of the Military Child and Month of the Military Family, Military Spouse Appreciation, Suicide Awareness Month and various other theme months related to support of military families.
- Collaborates with civilian and military professional resources.
- Represents the MFSC at military and community organization meetings concerning matters, programs, and services, which assist military personnel and family members.
- Serves as liaison with appropriate city, county, state, federal, and non-government agencies, as well as military commands, to further a comprehensive education/prevention program with regard to social services affecting military personnel, such as the Military Child Education Coalition.
- Attends Family Advocacy Committee (FAC) meetings and serves as technical consultant and advisor to the MFSC and FAC staff in the development of program initiatives, special projects and marketing and training materials.
- Coordinates MFSC orientation training for new personnel and coordinates quarterly MFSC staff training which may include required staff training and professional development opportunities.
- Curriculum Management - Develops, implements, and evaluates the MFSC education programs. Performs the overall maintenance of MFSC education and FAP courses and determines the need for and initiates changes/updates to course content. Determines the need for additional subject matter information and may meet with representatives of outside organizations in order to obtain it, then develop or adapt new or revised training materials for formal course use.
Establishes programming priorities, regularly reviewing all new and existing programming. Ensures training curriculum meets CNIC certification standards and includes required CNIC material.
