Annual Salary Ranges
  • Transportation Engineer I (B24): $65,104 - $106,634
  • Transportation Engineer II (B25): $69,572 - $114,099
  • Transportation Engineer III (B26): $76,530 - $129,430
  • Transportation Engineer IV (B27): $84,182 - $142,374
Responsibilities

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self‑supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

  • Assists in overseeing construction project traffic control plans; periodically reviews traffic control devices with Area Engineers.
  • Assists in overseeing contracts, issuing work orders, and monitoring construction schedules and contractor payments and job progress on construction projects.
  • Assists in reviewing shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
  • Conducts pre‑construction meetings and public hearings.
  • Conducts final inspections on completed construction projects.
  • Coordinates and/or monitors consultant contracts related to projects.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, tests, and provide technical support.
  • Monitors consultants’ progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
  • Assists Area Engineers with construction contract administration matters.
  • Analyzes and assists in the resolution of contract problems and disputes.
  • Resolves differences between contractors and inspectors.
Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

  • Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. (Experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.)

Licenses and

Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • For Bridge Inspection:
    Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of hire.

* Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from Texas within six months of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
