Essential Job Functions
- Perform fire/life‑safety inspections of commercial, industrial, institutional, assembly, and multi‑unit residential occupancies to identify hazards and verify compliance with adopted codes and Village ordinances; document findings, issue notices of violation, and verify corrective actions.
- Conduct re‑inspections and maintain accurate, timely records in the department’s records management system (RMS), including pre‑incident (pre‑plan) updates used by operations and dispatch.
- Assist with acceptance testing/field verification of fire protection and life‑safety systems (e.g., fire alarm, automatic sprinkler/standpipe, hood suppression, special hazard systems) and verify required documentation.
- Assist the Fire Chief with occupancy inspections tied to building permits, new business approvals, change‑of‑use/occupancy, and special events.
- Support plan/document reviews for new construction, renovations, and system installs (as assigned), coordinating comments related to fire code, access, water supply, fire department connections, system monitoring, and related life‑safety provisions.
- Provide public education/outreach on fire prevention and life‑safety topics; respond to citizen/business inquiries and complaints; follow up on false alarms/corrective actions as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required; coursework or training in fire inspections, code enforcement, or a related field preferred. Must be a certified State of Illinois Firefighter. A minimum of one (1) year of relevant inspection, fire prevention, required; three (3) or more years of fire service, prevention experience preferred.
- Fire Inspector I (OSFM, ICC, or NFPA) or OSFM Fire Prevention Officer I preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Position is anticipated to work 20 hours per week. The position is seasonal starting April 1st to November 30th. The starting hourly rate for the position is $25.00.
