Position: Deputy Chief of Visitor and Resource Protection (Law Enforcement)

Duties

As the Deputy Chief Ranger, you will:

  • Provide leadership to the division, working with the Chief Ranger to identify priorities and set work goals.
  • Plan projects to enhance the overall efficacy of the division and evaluate the results to determine success and next steps.
  • Manage human resources by ensuring all employees receive required training in a timely manner and are provided routine and consistent coaching and mentoring to elevate performance.
  • Exercise financial management by planning and allocating budget monies from multiple fund sources and adjusting schedules, organizational structure and project priorities in the face of changing financial conditions.
  • Utilize technical competence to apply law, policy, and guidance in the execution of duties.

Area/Duty Station Information: Everglades National Park covers 1.5 million acres and contains diverse ecosystems. Park headquarters is located in Homestead, FL. South Florida features two seasons and a range of weather, with opportunities for outdoor recreation and cultural experiences in nearby communities.

Requirements

  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

  • Must possess a Type I Law Enforcement Commission.
  • New employees must identify a financial institution for direct deposit within 30 days of entrance on duty.
  • Time-in-grade requirements apply as described in the vacancy announcement.
  • Selectee(s) will be required to carry a firearm and maintain firearm proficiency.
  • Selectee(s) must be free of domestic violence convictions; appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and may be subject to random testing.
  • Prior to appointment, you must be physically fit and pass a medical examination, with periodic medical exams during employment.

  • Prior to appointment, individuals must be physically fit to perform strenuous duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB).
  • You may be required to operate a government or private vehicle; a valid driver’s license is required.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight up to 5 nights per month and obtain a government charge card for travel.
  • You may be required to complete training and maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • The position is subject to a financial disclosure reporting requirement and you will need to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report within 30 days of appointment.
  • You must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • You must support and enforce a drug-free work environment.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date (02/09/2026 unless stated otherwise). Credit is given for qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, provide appropriate SF-50 documentation as needed. For non-federal applicants, indicate hours worked per week on the resume to ensure proper crediting of experience. Periods of military service may be documented with DD-214 or Statement of Service.
