The General Superintendent – Asphalt provides overall leadership and direction for all company asphalt milling, preparation, and paving operations. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all asphalt-related work through direct management of Asphalt Superintendents and Foremen to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in full compliance with contract documents and agency specifications.
Major Duties and Responsibilities- Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and applicable union work rules.
- Direct and oversee all asphalt milling, preparation, and paving activities through Asphalt Superintendents and Foremen.
- Determine construction means and methods, manpower requirements, equipment needs, material quantities, work sequencing, and production rates.
- Ensure work progresses in accordance with project schedules, owner milestones, and production targets.
- Inspect work in progress to verify compliance with contract documents, agency specifications, and quality control standards.
- Coordinate with Project Managers to develop, review, and adjust look-ahead schedules and daily work plans to maintain overall project timelines.
- Assist Foremen with project scheduling and sequencing based on labor availability, equipment utilization, and required completion dates.
- Collaborate with quality control to be sure that all asphalt mix designs are appropriate, available, and approved.
- Maintain responsibility for field cost control, including labor productivity, equipment utilization, and material usage.
- Review and analyze production reports, man-hours, material quantities, and job cost data; identify trends and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Perform daily review of field documentation including timecards, daily reports, schedule updates, and related correspondence.
- Assist estimating and preconstruction staff with bid preparation, means and methods development, and production planning for asphalt-related work.
- Coordinate asphalt operations with plant personnel, subcontractors, inspectors, and project stakeholders as required.
- Establish and maintain a professional, respectful, and performance-driven work environment.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, training, and performance oversight for Asphalt Superintendents, Foremen, and supporting field staff.
- Promote proactive communication, collaborative problem-solving, and constructive conflict resolution.
- Conduct and/or participate in regular operations, safety, and coordination meetings.
- Encourage and support ongoing professional development and continuous improvement for field personnel.
- In depth knowledge of laborer and local 150 union regulations and requirements
- Knowledge of construction industry practices and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task across several projects
- Working knowledge of Excel, Word, Bluebeam or Carlson
- Self-directed and motivated
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and on budget
- Asphalt specifications for private, IDOT, Illinois Tollway, and FAA projects
- Knowledge of stringless paving technology
- Knowledge of asphalt plant operations
- General knowledge of quality control specifications and requirements related to asphalt mix designs
Physical Requirements

- Must be able to stand up to 12 hours per day with breaks.
