This position supports excise tax compliance and advisory projects for clients in industries including Oil & Gas, Transportation, Manufacturing and Retail. The compliance role covers US Federal and State excise tax filings (fuel tax obligations). The advisory work includes due diligence, structuring assistance, licensing research and consultation, controversy support, interpretation of new legislation, and reviewing related correspondence (memos, ruling requests, etc.).
Examples include air transportation excise tax, alcohol and tobacco excise tax, PCORI fee, Superfund excise tax, and firearms/ammunition excise tax. This role also involves coaching and developing junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead compliance support to the engagement team; supervise and evaluate seniors and analysts; communicate with clients; provide tax technical recommendations; resolve engagement issues.
- Collaborate in a highly collaborative culture; contribute to delivering high-quality work and meeting deadlines.
- Demonstrate understanding of excise tax concepts and apply them to client situations.
- Develop and deliver quality tax planning approaches with timely services and work products that meet or exceed client expectations.
- Identify opportunities for excise tax compliance, planning, and other services with clients.
- Prepare practical approaches to client tax situations and reach appropriate conclusions.
- Develop recommendations and implementation plans; make informed decisions in complex areas.
- Stay up-to-date on trends, developments, and legislation affecting clients.
- Research advanced tax issues and develop practical solutions.
- Lead and coach team members in managing engagement lifecycle and economics for the practice.
- Ensure financial and economic health of managed engagements.
- Ability to lead client discussions, monitor commitments and deadlines, and drive internal teams to completion.
- Collaborate with clients and colleagues to analyze tax issues and recommend solutions; support compliance with data analysis.
- Apply independent and objective decision making; know when to ask questions or proceed.
- Receive direction from senior team members; analyze federal and state statutes and related regulations; articulate conclusions to team and clients.
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree (Accounting, Business, Finance or equivalent preferred).
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in a professional services or tax services organization.
- Excellent organizational and verbal/written communications skills.
- Effective time management; ability to work in a fast-paced professional services environment.
- Strong research skills with familiarity with Westlaw, CCH, RIA, etc.; strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Strong knowledge of excise tax concepts; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Willingness to travel as needed; able to work in a balanced hybrid environment.
- CPA, EA, or JD/LLM (not required).
