The field safety specialist I functions as a leader in the safety department, working under the authority and direction of the director of safety and health. This entry-level position provides technical safety expertise and knowledge by consulting with supported lines of business and performing observations and assessments.
This role makes recommendations and provides guidance on safe work practices and behaviors to influence and continually improve safety culture and performance, and documents adherence to safe work practices and behaviors in the office and field. Frequently leads analysis to identify safety-related factors and recommends corrective actions. After a period of time, with a review by safety leadership, a field safety specialist I may be expected to guide and consult 10-35 field employees daily to ensure safe work practices on the job.
Responsibilities- Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
- Provide consistent, technical, and practical interpretation of regulations, procedures, and standards.
- Collaborate with the operations team to implement a strategy that supports the execution of work and controls.
- Identify, propose, and execute corrective action plans to eliminate identified safety risks and exposures.
- Create sustainable safety culture, conditions, and practices.
- Partner with other safety professionals to provide insight and coaching in the development of correction plans.
- Participate, facilitate, and conduct incident/accident investigations. Suggest and identify improvement opportunities. Ensure identified corrective actions are executed and implemented.
- Identify training needs of others, develop training programs or classes, and teach or instruct others in accordance with OSHA/DOT/state regulations.
- Assume the duties of the project safety manager or director.
- Build productive relationships with field employees, supervisors and managers, directors, senior leaders, and safety to jointly identify, plan and prioritize the requirements to produce stronger safety leadership and management skills and safe practices.
- Engage with employees and leaders to increase safe behaviors, rule/procedure adherence, hazards, exposures, and proactively identify barriers to safe work.
- Partner with other safety specialists when the escalation process is required and lead the briefing with the senior leaders.
- Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
- Perform daily safety observation with face‑to‑face interaction.
