Sanitation Worker

Drive a single or tandem axle side loading refuse packer truck and collect and dispose of solid waste. Works at the recycling center when required sorting recyclables. May be assigned to a roll-off truck or boom truck instead of side loaders.

Responsibilities
  • Pick up and dump refuse containers and trash.
  • Collect large items such as tree limbs and deposit on a flatbed truck.
  • Cut or mow weeds and grass to leave streets, alleys and surrounding property in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Utilize hand tools such as shovels, pitchforks, rakes and small power tools such as saws and mowers.
  • Wash, paint and service city equipment and machinery; assist with minor repair.
  • Will periodically assist other departments with moving large or heavy objects and general maintenance.
  • Assist the driver at the landfill when unloading.
  • Will clean behind packer and inside hopper.
  • Any solid waste management activity required of the solid waste management division to adequately perform public service responsibilities.
  • Assist in recycling activities.
  • Assist in solid waste disposal related activities when not driving a regular route.
  • Assist other departmental staff on special projects as directed.
  • Perform weekend and holiday duty as assigned.
  • Positively represent the Sanitation Department by efficiently completing tasks at all times and to the best of your ability.
  • Follow all department policies and procedures.
  • Attend safety classes, reinforce and comply with company safety policies
  • Work harmoniously with ESG employees and the public and comply with ESG policies
Qualifications

Prefer six months of related experience, high school diploma or GED, or specialized vocational training. Must have a valid state driver's license and meet minimum driving standards.

Knowledge
  • Processes used in the collection and disposal of waste materials.
  • Guide others, requiring decisions, affecting the individual, co-workers; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures.
  • Make decisions with very minor impact - affects only the individual.
Skills
  • The use of various equipment and machinery such as hand tools and heavy equipment utilized in disposal activities such as compactors, lifts, claws and various hydraulic systems as well as shovels, brooms and rakes.
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Abilities
  • Effectively communicate with employees and citizens who will inquire regarding disposal procedures.
  • Work with citizens who may have complaints on services provided.
  • Read simple sentences or instructions; write simple sentences; speak simple sentences using basic grammar.
  • Perform semi-routine work following procedures, with occasional problems; requires normal attention for accurate results.
Working conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, bright and/or dim light, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors. All required safety standards shall be adhered to mitigate risk from moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, heights, blood-borne pathogens, traffic, animals and wildlife, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other identified hazards.

Physical

requirements

This position requires frequent standing, kneeling, bending and climbing. The employee must be able to use hands to operate and manipulate tools and equipment. This position requires very heavy physical exertion including the ability to lift over 50 pounds and exert over 100 pounds of force on a regular basis.

The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and depth perception.
