Description

The Nursing Assistant I, position is for the 25‑bed surgical unit. This unit provides acute inpatient services for the surgical patient population which includes Joint, Spine, Urology, and General Surgery admissions as well as medical overflow patients. We are looking for an experienced, energetic, patient‑centered team member with a positive attitude. This unit fosters an environment that values diversity, teamwork, open communication, while proving exceptional service.

UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is a community hospital which is an extension of UNC Medical Center focusing on many of our elective surgical programs. The 163‑bed facility combines a community hospital culture with the innovative procedures and care for which the UNC Medical Center is known. The Hillsborough Hospital has achieved accreditation by The Joint Commission s disease specific program for their Total Hip and Knee Replacement service.

This accreditation is the result of many years of work by the inter‑professional team caring for these patients. The Hillsborough Campus has also received the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for Patient Experience and ranks in the top five percent in the nation for patient experience. The Hillsborough Hospital is located at 430 Waterstone Drive, Hillsborough, NC and offers free parking for employees.

This is a 36 hours per week position; working 12 hour rotating shifts (7:00am ‑ 7:30pm & 7:00pm‑7:30am) with weekend and holiday rotation.

Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
  • In the psychiatric setting, aid patients in reality orientation, participate in behavior modification plans/therapy, provide informal support therapy to patients/families, provide verbal de‑escalation of potentially aggressive patients, aid in the physical management of aggressive/out‑of‑control patients, facilitate age appropriate play for children, and monitor the therapeutic milieu activities on assigned unit to ensure that emotional and safety needs of patients are met.
  • Observe, collect, and document patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient s condition to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Provide assistance to patients and their families during admission to the clinical area, orientation to the hospital/clinic/home health experience, and discharge.
  • Provide care/treatments to patients as outlined in plan of care including, but not limited to, the measurement of vital signs, height and weight, specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive patient and family interactions.
  • Provide direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care for routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding and assisting with ambulation.
  • Provide indirect care to patients and the assigned area to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, changing linens, re‑stocking supplies, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, assisting in the orientation of new employees and students, and some routine clerical functions.
  • Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

    • None required as long as all other position requirements are met.

    Licensure/Certification Requirements:

    • Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

    Professional Experience Requirements:

    • Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience
