Summary
This position provides patient care and technical services to adult and pediatric dialysis patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Nephrology Attending Physician.
Responsibilities- Assemble and prepare all necessary supplies and equipment for dialysis treatment. Clean and disinfect equipment after completion of treatment. Perform weekly and monthly disinfection of portable ROs; report equipment malfunctions. Assist with machine set-up and breakdown during turnover between shifts.
- Check main RO water every 4 hours and complete checklist.
- Obtain patients' post dialysis vital signs and weights.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, order when necessary. Keep closets and storage areas neat and orderly. Receive shipments of supplies from outside vendors. Maintain sharp containers and ensure they are disposed of in a timely manner.
- Monitor patient condition during dialysis treatment to include obtaining and recording vital signs and machine parameters. Monitor and adjust blood flow rates and transmembrane pressures. Participate in responding to dialysis complications. Troubleshoot machine alarms to assist RN in Main Unit and ICU.
- Participate in patient care plan conferences and patient/family education.
- Prepare patient for dialysis treatment to include obtaining vital signs. Inspect access site and report to nursing staff. Cannulate blood vessels for dialysis access (only with documented competency). Route lab samples for RN ensuring correct labeling. Pick up blood from blood bank.
- None required as long as other position qualifications are met.
- Certified Hemodialysis Practitioner by Bonent or Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
- Two (2) years of hospital related experience (patient care, equipment, or laboratory), with one (1) year of hemodialysis experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position include the ability to maintain equipment inventory, perform machine disinfection, monitor patient parameters, perform cannulation, designated as listed above.
