Overview
The Orange County Health Department is seeking a highly-motivated and experienced office assistant with excellent customer service and communication skills to assist with the daily operations of nutrition services programs.
The work is primarily responsible for providing administrative support to the nutrition program and the Personal Health Services in the Health Department. Typical work functions include, but are not limited to, scheduling clients, working with medical offices to obtain referral information, providing reports for referred and enrolled clients, preparing client medical records prior to appointments, and compiling data for regular and special reports as well as typical administrative duties.
This position will be trained to assist with department outreach events and public health preparedness and response.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Nutrition Program Manager with some leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work, and in making decisions regarding customer needs and requests and conducting project assignments. Some work will be performed off site and outside of regular business hours.
Supervision is not a responsibility of this class. Does related work as required.

- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in Office Administration or related field; OR graduation from high school or GED equivalency and two (2) years’ medical office and customer service experience.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a background check. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience.
- Must have excellent administrative skills and the ability to maintain client records.
