General Description

The Outdoor School Field Instructors assume responsibility for the planning and implementation of field-based environmental education programs at residential Outdoor Science School sites. This position is overnight, requiring the employee to live on-site during the work week Monday–Friday. Room and board are provided. Our program operates at multiple sites in Northwest Oregon near the following communities:
Vernonia, Salem, Cloverdale, Rockaway Beach, and Welches. Employee will be compensated 50 hours per week. Weekly schedule varies from Monday–Friday or Sunday–Thursday. Most work weeks are 5 days. Due to the seasonal camp-based nature of this position, it is exempt for state overtime wage regulations.

Qualifications
  • College graduate or equivalent amount of directly related experience.
  • Ability and desire to work with children and be outdoors.
  • Prior work and/or volunteer experience in a teaching capacity is preferred.
  • Training, knowledge, and previous work experience with relevant subject matter.
  • Ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships in a residential work environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to manage both large and small groups of students safely through various program activities.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn best practices in Outdoor Education to share content knowledge to students attending the Outdoor School program.
  • Ability to work on a team and collaborate with others.
  • Knowledge of restorative practices and compassionate conflict resolution.
  • Personable, timely, and communicative.
  • Ability to follow lesson plans as provided by Northwest Outdoor Science School.
  • Essential Functions

    The duties listed below are not inclusive, but characteristic of the type and level of work assigned for this position.

  • Train counselors (high school & college volunteers) to teach field study content
  • Mentor counselors and staff assistants while they teach elementary and middle school students
  • Provide direct instruction to elementary students
  • Develop lesson plans and outlines of duties for counselors and teachers
  • Prepare teaching and student guides and other necessary instructional materials
  • Use small group study in a discovery approach under instructor guidance
  • Motivate students to be informed, concerned, and involved in their environment
  • Meet with teachers daily to plan instructional activities to meet the needs of the students
  • Work with other Field Instructors and Site Supervisors to integrate all field studies
  • Evaluate program and instruction quality to offer the best possible learning opportunities
  • At every opportunity, encourage teachers to participate in education activities
  • Be consistently aware of student and staff health and safety while on field study
  • Be responsible for all assigned supplies and materials
  • Strive to minimize physical impacts on field study areas
