Position: Custodian-Engineer I

Overview

Join our team! The St. Paul Public Library is seeking a skilled and dependable Custodian-Engineer I to help maintain safe, clean, and fully functional facilities that support our staff and the community we serve. This position plays a critical frontline role in building operations assisting with the maintenance of heating and cooling systems, maintaining high custodial standards, and responding to day-to-day facility needs.

The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, understands the importance of preventative maintenance, and is committed to delivering reliable service in a public-facing environment.

We currently have one vacancy with the City of Saint Paul Libraries. The eligible list created from this exam will be used to fill Custodian-Engineer I positions as they become available within the City.

Information specific to department vacancy: A typical working schedule is 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The position will be assigned to a primary library branch but is expected to cover all branches when needed. Weekends and holidays are required if snow removal is needed or there is an urgency/emergency, but not as part of the typical work schedule.

Responsibilities

The Custodian-Engineer I helps maintain safe, clean, and fully functional facilities and supports building operations related to heating and cooling systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with maintenance of heating and cooling systems and day-to-day facility needs.
  • Preserve high custodial standards and deliver reliable service in a public-facing environment.
  • Participate in preventative maintenance as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience performing cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Special Engineer Boiler’s License.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.
  • For positions in the Saint Paul Public Library and Saint Paul Public Works:
    Must obtain a Second Class C (2C) Boiler License within fifteen months.

Qualifications Rating
The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to Supplemental Questionnaire. Be as specific and detailed as possible in completing your application and questionnaire. You must submit your completed application and supplemental questionnaire by the Final date to receive applications.

General information: This posting is open to anyone who meets the position requirements. Eligible lists typically are created from a pass/fail assessment. Those who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months. Hiring Managers may interview/hire anyone from the list.

Final Selection Process
:
You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.

Pre-Employment Screening: This position may require or requires a medical examination, driver’s license check, drug test, and/or a background check which may include criminal history.
