Overview
North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic is seeking a full-time Pro Bono/ Immigration Practice Assistant to join our Pro Bono and Immigration Teams.
The mission of the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic (NSLAC) is to provide accessible, quality, equitable, free legal services in the areas of domestic violence, housing, and immigration to give low-income, at-risk community members access to justice and the opportunity to live productive and secure lives. NSLAC is a 10-year-old dynamic nonprofit with a collaborative culture and the goal of becoming the model legal aid organization focused on suburban communities.
The Pro Bono Practice Assistant will report to the Pro Bono Coordinator for day-to-day pro bono responsibilities and will be supervised by the Director of the Immigration Law Practice for their responsibilities supporting both teams.
Job Responsibilities- Assist in case management of pro bono attorney cases, including but not limited to managing and organizing client files in Microsoft, as well as case/client entry in Legal Server;
- Assist the Immigration Team with intakes, such as interpreting and case management in Legal server;
- Assist with drafting cover letters, preparing forms and preparing application packets with supervision and review of the Pro Bono Coordinator and/or Immigration Leadership Team;
- Stay up to date on changes to the Immigration laws and policies;
- Follow up on pending case work and maintain communication with clients and pro bono attorneys via phone, email, or mail;
- Follow up on pending case work and maintain communications with clients and the Immigration Team attorneys and DOJs;
- Provide workshop preparation and logistical support to Pro Bono Coordinator during off-site pro bono legal clinics, including notary public services where applicable;
- Act as an interpreter at pro bono legal clinics and for pro bono attorneys on their cases;
- Act as an interpreter at Immigration off-site clinics and workshops;
- Translate documents when necessary for pro bono attorneys and the Immigration Team;
- Conduct an annual audit of existing pro bono attorney volunteer statuses;
- Track volunteer involvement and hours in Legal Server;
- Participate in on-going legal trainings and other professional development;
- Assist with continuing legal education programming for NSLAC staff;
- Represent NSLAC at community functions, and at other events as requested;
- Assist with internship recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and offboarding;
- Assist in creation of outreach materials using Canva and/or similar software;
- Perform research and other responsibilities needed to ensure the NSLAC team’s success.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree;
- Must be fluent in Spanish;
- Ability to act as Spanish language interpreter to conduct client intakes and assist with client consultations;
- Experience with Legal Server or other legal case management system, preferred;
- Ability to work independently as well as with people of diverse cultural, educational, and professional backgrounds;
- Willingness to work flexible hours as needed Monday-Friday. Some evenings and weekends may be required;
- Access to a car, valid driver’s license and insurance, and ability to travel within the northern suburbs of Chicago;
- A demonstrated team-player with exemplary interpersonal skills in collaborating and communicating with others;
- Ability to succeed in a fast-paced non-profit environment.
- $45,000-$55,000, commensurate with experience;
