Tutor – SETPD & Functional Skills (Lifeskills Centre, Thomley)

Salary:
From £24,246 FTE Salary is negotiable and based on experience

Apply today and join a team supporting young people in a setting that’s built around their needs. Set within the inspiring grounds of the Thomley Activity Centre in Worminghall, our Lifeskills provision offers a peaceful, sensory-aware environment where young people with Special Educational Needs aged 15–25 can find their rhythm, reconnect with learning, and grow in confidence.

We’re looking for someone who instinctively understands how to build trust with young people who haven’t always felt safe or seen in education. You might have worked in a specialist school, SEN department, or as a TA supporting EHCP learners. Maybe you’ve run community projects or 1:1 mentoring. What’s most important is your relational approach, patience and curiosity.

You’ll plan and deliver small group sessions under our SETPD framework, combining Functional Skills (Maths & English) with life skills around communication, wellbeing, routine and independence. You don’t need to be a qualified teacher — we’ll provide training and fund your Level 3 Award in Education & Training.

This is a chance to walk alongside learners as they take meaningful steps forward — and to do it in a unique, outdoor-adjacent setting that truly puts young people first.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Functional Skills English and Maths (Entry 1–Level
    2) in a creative and supportive way
  • Plan and lead SETPD sessions covering topics such as emotional wellbeing, communication, independence, digital skills, budgeting, and workplace preparation
  • Create engaging, differentiated sessions for small groups of learners, tailoring your approach to a wide range of needs and learning styles
  • Work collaboratively with other tutors and support staff to design and deliver schemes of work and session plans
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with learners using trauma-informed and relational approaches
  • Track and record learner progress and engagement against EHCP and programme goals
  • Contribute to learner onboarding, induction, and regular reviews
  • Support learner progression across flexible pathways (e.g., building confidence to transition from small group settings to more structured classroom or work environments)
  • Travel between the Milton Keynes, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, and Thomley centres may be required to support delivery.

About Us

New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 15–25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, around 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire will join one of our programmes. Many of these students are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.

Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as “Toolshed.” Ten years on, NMT continues to grow, with new centres opening in September 2025 in Nuneaton and Milton Keynes.

We have a range of programmes at New Meaning Training Bucks & Herts:
Construction Multiskills, Motor Mechanics, Sports, Hair & Beauty, Computing, Childcare, Catering and Boost Work skills. Not all programmes are available at every location, but all incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a ‘Transition Support’ programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.

NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma-Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.

You will have:

  • A full UK driving licence and access to a business-insured vehicle, with the ability to travel between our Buckinghamshire centres if needed.
  • Experienc…
