** What You'll Do:
** The Civilian Traffic Investigator plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of motorists within the City of High Point by providing essential non-emergency services. Responsibilities include assisting stranded motorists, directing traffic, and investigating vehicle crashes in accordance with state law.
This position requires the successful completion of specialized training in traffic crash investigation provided by the North Carolina Justice Academy, as well as field training with an experienced law enforcement officer. Upon completion of both classroom and field training, the investigator will be responsible for actively monitoring radio dispatch for vehicle crashes, traffic hazards, and disabled vehicles, responding to incidents, assisting the motoring public, and completing all required state and local documentation.
As this role involves direct interaction with the public, the investigator must wear a Body-Worn Camera during all citizen encounters and as mandated by departmental policy. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential for success in this position.
** Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:
*** Respond (non-emergency) to vehicle crash scenes.
* Complete Investigative reports using the MDT and submit reports to the traffic supervisor for review.
* Determine contributing factors in vehicle crashes in accordance with NC motor vehicle law.
* Ability to research NC motor vehicle law and apply the appropriate determination attributable to the vehicle crash.
* Interact with citizens and coworkers at the scene of vehicle crashes as well as during daily operations.
* Establish and maintain scene safety using traffic control devices (cones, barricades, etc.) at the scene of vehicle crashes.
* Direct vehicles to be towed as needed.
* Direct traffic at crash scenes and other events requiring traffic direction.
* Assist disabled motorists and aid in the removal of abandoned vehicles that obstruct roadways.
* Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, and supplies, ensuring availability and proper working order.
* May testify as a witness in court.
* Perform other duties and related work as assigned.
* Enforce City of High Point parking ordinances.

* Qualifications:
**** MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
*** High school diploma or GED
* Must currently possess a valid driver's license issued by N.C (Note A valid driver's license Is a current driver's license that is not revoked, suspended, subject to limited restoration or conditional operation privileges)
* Must be able to work under the general supervision of the unit supervisor on a fixed work schedule.
* Successful completion of a polygraph and background investigation is required.
* Additional consideration will be given to applicants with related field experience.
* Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
* Eligible candidates must submit to an interview process, and background checks to include successful completion of a polygraph test and drug screen.
* Must be a US citizen
* Obtain certification as a Civilian Traffic Investigator through the North Carolina Justice Academy. (class will be taught in-house once hired).
* Obtain certification in NCIC/DCI. **(Per North Carolina Administrative Code - "A conviction of a crime or unlawful act defined as a Class B misdemeanor renders an applicant or certified DCIN user ineligible to become certified as a DCIN user when such conviction is within 10 years of the application date of the request for DCIN certification.
