Cherry Bekaert is searching for an Interim Executive Director of Finance to support a higher education institution during a critical transition period. This is a contract engagement expected to last approximately 9 months
, beginning as soon as possible and running through year‑end.

This role will provide leadership and continuity while the organization completes year‑end close, prepares FY26 financial statements, and conducts a permanent search.

Title: Interim Executive Director of Finance

Location: Winston‑Salem, NC

Work Environment: This position can be remote if the candidate has experience in Higher Education, otherwise it is a hybrid/on‑site schedule

Hourly Rate: $85.00 - $100.00/hour depending on experience

Job Type: Contract (9 months)

Required: Experience in Higher Education preferred with experience at the Community College level strongly preferred

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct all fiscal operations and financial reporting for the organization
  • Oversee accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting for all funds
  • Coordinate and lead year‑end close, audit, and financial statement preparation
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
  • Maintain complete and accurate financial records for audit purposes
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and cash flow management
  • Plan and manage workflows to ensure all reporting deadlines are met
  • Produce periodic financial, operating, and statistical reports
  • Ensure proper recording of all receipts and expenditures
Leadership & Management
  • Directly supervise staff within the Financial Services function
  • Provide guidance, training, and performance management for the team
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, and transition planning as needed
  • Address issues proactively and ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required (from a U.S. Department of Education accredited institution)
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting experience
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory or management experience in accounting
  • Governmental accounting experience strongly preferred
  • CPA required
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration preferred
