Position OverviewThe Mechanical Engineer III will serve as a key mechanical engineering resource within Plant Engineering at Corning’s Hickory, NC manufacturing facility. This role primarily supports mechanical design and implementation for projects focused on improving existing fiber optic cable manufacturing equipment. The position offers hands-on involvement from design through installation, debugging, and production integration.
Key Responsibilities- Design tooling and mechanical assemblies using Autodesk Inventor
, Vault
, and AutoCAD - Modify and revise existing equipment drawings to support upgrades and improvements
- Obtain vendor quotes, select components, and manage part procurement
- Develop and execute experimental plans to validate mechanical designs
- Assemble systems or oversee assembly activities, with opportunities for hands-on work
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues during equipment integration into production
- Support manufacturing equipment repair and maintenance activities
- Manage and coordinate mechanics and electricians during equipment installation and assembly
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including process, electrical, and IT engineers
- Work with operations to update technical documentation and support training initiatives
- Ensure compliance with all plant safety policies and procedures
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent practical engineering experience
Experience:
- Minimum 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
Technical
Skills:
- Mechanical system design and integration experience
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Inventor preferred) and AutoCAD
- Working knowledge of drafting standards and GD&T
- Experience working with machine shops and external vendors
- Hands-on troubleshooting experience with:
- Pneumatic systems
- Flow control systems
- Water cooling systems
- Experience with manufacturing equipment repair and maintenance
- Experience leading or coordinating trades during equipment assembly and installation
- Familiarity with plastic extrusion manufacturing
- Electrical troubleshooting experience, including:
- Low and medium voltage systems
- Motion control systems
- PLCs
- Temperature control systems
- Working knowledge of data analysis tools such as Microsoft Excel, PI, and/or Power BI
- Strong team player; self-starter with a results-oriented mindset
- Makes decisions in the best interest of the team and organization
- Effective communicator across disciplines and skill levels
- Comfortable working in manufacturing floor and construction environments
- Strong commitment to job site safety; proactive in identifying and mitigating safety or environmental risks
- Adheres to all plant policies, procedures, and safety requirements
