Lead Transportation Engineer role at WSP in the U.S.

WSP is initiating a search for a Lead Transportation Engineer with experience in Highway design to join our Civil Engineering group in the Mid Atlantic District. The candidate may be located in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Herndon, VA, Baltimore, MD, Virginia Beach, VA or Richmond, VA
.

The ideal candidate should have experience in the design of highways, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. Responsibilities include design and plan production and project management support. The candidate will have a comprehensive range of roadway design experience related to transportation infrastructure projects, including geometric design, complete streets, temporary traffic control, and highway design.

This role will be a key contributor in daily activities and mentoring of our transportation team.

Primary duties center on supporting flagship infrastructure programs across transportation, transit, site, and environmental sectors. Ideal candidates would lead technical design programs, facilitate client engagement, reinforce internal design standards, and identify future contract opportunities. The candidate will partner with senior team members to grow technical expertise across the region.

The candidate is expected to provide subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site/phased heavy civil programs including site layout, roadway, MOT, grading, drainage, stormwater management, utility and erosion & sediment control across public and private sectors.

Your Impact

  • Develop construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans and update infrastructure layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients in accordance with required level of effort and detail at deliverable milestone.
  • Lead client-facing engagement sessions centered on technical memoranda.
  • Support / lead large-scale heavy civil projects ensuring collaborators are aligned on roles & responsibilities of the deliverables.
  • Assist with engineering review of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans and contracts, waste management plans, and inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and sound engineering practice.
  • Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to address engineering, design, and construction issues or opportunities.
  • Collect and analyze data from site surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utilities, maps, hydrologic analyses, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Apply high-level civil engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Perform professional civil engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions to determine conformance with rules, standards, and permits.
  • Manage design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, pavement design, specifications, building materials, phasing, and safety plans.
  • Oversee development and implementation of advanced technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users and transportation systems.
  • Coordinate work within the team, lead projects, and be on site for client meetings and mentoring staff.
  • Remain current in latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline. Postgraduate education may apply.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and civil design.
