Respiratory Therapy Manager

Definition of Position

The Manager for the hospital Respiratory Therapy department is responsible for daily operations, clinical oversight, and strategic planning for the RT department. This role ensures high‑quality, evidence‑based respiratory care services are delivered in compliance with regulatory standards and aligned with the organization's mission. The manager leads the respiratory care team, oversees staffing and scheduling, supports performance improvement initiatives, and collaborates with physicians and nursing leaders to optimize patient outcomes.

The Nurse Manager reports to the Chief Nursing Officer.

Responsibilities
  • Direct the delivery of respiratory therapy services across inpatient, emergency, and outpatient settings.
  • Oversee daily operations, including scheduling, staffing levels, and resource allocation.
  • Ensure timely, safe, and effective interventions including mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, aerosolized medication delivery, and diagnostic testing.
  • Serve as a clinical expert and mentor to respiratory therapists.
  • Maintain and ensure adherence to department protocols, clinical pathways, and evidence‑based practices.
  • Monitor quality of care and patient safety metrics, including ventilator‑associated event prevention and respiratory readmissions.
  • Manage department budget, equipment inventory, and supply usage.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance and evaluate new technologies and equipment for effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Ensure proper documentation and billing processes are followed.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and retain qualified staff.
  • Facilitate staff competency assessments, continuing education, and certification compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission, state health departments).
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals to develop and implement care plans.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, code teams, rapid response, and emergency preparedness planning.
  • Support surge capacity planning and emergency response coordination.
  • Act as a liaison with ancillary departments to resolve operational issues and improve interdepartmental communication.
  • Monitor incident reporting and escalation processes; facilitate timely follow‑up with unit leadership and risk management.
  • Employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education

Required:

Associate's degree in respiratory therapy. Evidence of continuing education relevant to respiratory therapy, management, Healthcare Administration, or related field.

Preferred:
Bachelor's or master's Degree.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations

Required:

Current RRT license in the State of Oregon; ACLS, PALS, CPI training (or equivalent), NRP.

Preferred: NA.

Experience

Required:

Minimum of 5 years of clinical respiratory therapy experience with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.

Preferred:
Experience in acute care hospital settings. Previous manager experience.
