Overview
Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) are the first point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers when they arrive at the training venue; are responsible for checking them in; verifying weapons and credentials; conducting training and overseeing the course of fire at the gun-range. They are responsible for ensuring the safety of all personnel on the range and securing SSI and SPII information during and after requalification sessions.
Responsibilities- Serve as the on-site training manager for the program; conduct all classroom instruction and deliver the approved TSA training and safety brief.
- Introduce and describe new equipment; ensure all students understand and sign the safety briefing.
- Maintain an instructor/student ratio of 1:6 and ensure sufficient inventory of training supplies for monthly requalification sessions.
- Maintain control of the training environment from student arrival to departure; verify weapons and credentials before training commences by visual inspection.
- Ensure proper scoring of targets; complete applicable administrative forms; collect and certify qualification scores for all FFDOs attempting to qualify.
- In the event of a failure to qualify, manage custody of equipment and coordinate return with TSA/FAMS; notify the FFDO Program Office if needed.
- Keep SSI and SPII secured in compliance with TSA policies (MD 2100.2; Privacy and Information Collection Policy; MD 1400.3 TSA Information Security Policy).
- Oversee timekeeping of all SFI labor hours and comply with internal compliance training events.
- EDUCATION / EQUIVALENT TRAINING:
Current or former federal law enforcement agent; officer; or civilian employee who has completed a recognized federal firearm instructor training program deemed acceptable by TSA/FAMS. Examples include FLETC FITP; FAMS Firearms Instructor Training Program; FBI/DEA Firearms Instructor Training Program; U.S. Postal Inspectors Firearms Instructor Training Program or equivalent. All LFIs must successfully complete a 2–3 day firearms re-qualification training program under the direction of the SAC;
FAMS Training Division; and the FFDO Program Office. Areas of instruction include re-qualification courses of fire; procedural requirements for re-qualification sessions; and use of a GFE AED and basic first aid. - EXPERIENCE:
5 years of firearms training experience. - Associates Degree, or the equivalent combination of education, certifications, or relevant work/military experience.

Working conditions include indoor/outdoor ranges; handling weapons and ammunition; exposure to high noise levels requiring hearing protection; exposure to expelled gunpowder; washing hands after handling ammunition; potential physical effort in handling light materials; and security requirements including successful completion of a background check.

The likely hourly rate for this position is between $30.44 - $41.18. Salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
