Overview

Instructor, Histotechnology primary responsibilities include designing and implementing learning strategies for students in the Histotechnology (HTO) Program; developing course syllabi and instructional materials; maintaining instructional records; student recruitment, advisement, and retention; developing and evaluating courses, programs and services; participating in College activities and committees; and other duties which support the mission and initiatives of the College. This position reports directly to the Program Head of Histotechnology, who reports to the Dean of Health Sciences.

The position includes clinical instruction and instruction in the laboratory and online learning environments.

Responsibilities
  • I. Actively embracing the College mission, vision, and values by
    :
  • Promoting the College mission, values, and vision.
  • Becoming involved in the culture of the College. That can be expressed in many ways. Here are just a few examples: through attendance at planning and development sessions, becoming involved with student clubs or organizations, mentoring or advising students and/or newer or adjunct faculty, attendance at student- activity events (such as sports, International Night, etc.).
  • Demonstrating initiative, flexibility, and an openness to change.
  • Embracing innovation and being open to risk-taking.
  • Maintaining professionalism in the VGCC community through an attitude of respect and collegiality.
  • Performing assigned tasks that support the mission and initiatives of the College.
  • Adhering to all College policies and processes.
  • II. Fostering student success through
    :
  • Teaching the course content to align with the course and program level outcomes using the assessment measures defined by the School.
  • Fostering the classroom environment in a way that maintains respect for diversity among students, including learning styles, and honors the focus on student learning and equity.
  • Ensuring that teaching strategies include active student engagement, timely and consistent feedback, and accurate up-to-date record keeping (attendance, grades in Moodle, Starfish, midterm, and final grade reporting, etc.).
  • Actively participating in completion initiatives.
  • III. Promoting effective teaching and learning through
    :
  • Teaching the course content to align with the course and program level outcomes using the assessment measures defined by the School.
  • Fostering the classroom environment in a way that maintains respect for diversity among students, including learning styles, and honors the focus on student learning and equity.
  • Ensuring that teaching strategies include active student engagement, timely and consistent feedback, and accurate up-to-date record keeping (attendance, grades in Moodle, Starfish, midterm, and final grade reporting, etc.).
  • Actively participating in completion initiatives.
  • IV. Demonstrating commitment to a relevant and rigorous curriculum by
    :
  • Participating in the evaluation of courses and programs.
  • Participating in discussions relevant to choosing textbooks and other instructional materials.
  • Identifying and providing supporting resources through innovative use of the learning environment and collaboration with support services on campus.
  • Obtaining and accurately reporting data needed to assess the College’s efficacy in teaching and learning.
  • Engaging collaboratively with colleagues in assessing relevant course and program data, determining how courses and programs can be improved, implementing and evaluating resulting changes.
  • Participate in activities necessary to attain and maintain program accreditation from NAACLS.
  • Solicit support from advisory committee in order to implement change for program improvement.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Histotechnology or related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of three years of full-time employment or the equivalent in clinical practice as an HT or HTL preferred or ASCP BOC Certified CT, MLS or MLT
  • Minimum of three years of experience in medical or laboratory education
  • Holds ASCP-BOC U.S. certification as a HT or HTL, CT, MLS or MLT
  • Skill in the use of computers and commitment to using technology
  • Experience with MS Office 2010
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with others
  • Must be able to lift objects from a lower to higher position or move objects horizontally from position to position.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for substantial periods of time.
