basic functionunder general supervision, the network systems administrator is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and support of the organization’s enterprise network infrastructure. The position supports mission-critical and public safety systems, ensures network reliability and security, responds to incidents and service disruptions, and collaborates with internal staff and service providers to maintain effective and resilient network operations.
classification characteristicsthe network systems administrator is a lead-level position responsible for overseeing network functions within the city. The position is distinguished from lower-level information technology classifications by the level of complexity of assigned tasks and the level of knowledge required. This position may exercise technical supervision over lower-level staff and may act as the information technology manager in their absence.

- performs a variety of duties in the development, installation, implementation, testing, evaluation, and administration of network infrastructure; provides technical assistance regarding all aspects of system design, installation, and troubleshooting.
- researches and recommends the purchase of computer related equipment and peripherals.
- installs, configures, operates, monitors, maintains, and supports the organization’s enterprise network infrastructure, including wired and wireless networks, connectivity services, servers, and related systems, in accordance with established standards and best practices.
- monitors network performance, availability, and capacity; identifies and troubleshoots network and connectivity issues; and implements corrective actions to maintain reliable and efficient operations.
- implements and maintains secure, reliable, and highly available network and server configurations, supports mission-critical and public safety systems, including participation in after-hours, on-call, emergency response, disaster recovery, system backups, replication, and business continuity activities.
- plans, coordinates, and implements network changes, upgrades, and maintenance activities while following established change management, security, and configuration control procedures.
- maintains accurate network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, procedures, and operational records, and coordinates with internal departments, public safety personnel, vendors, and service providers to support operational needs and resolve issues.
- provides audio-visual technical support for public meetings; sets up and operates sound equipment and video recordings; rotates camera feeds; monitors and troubleshoots media system issues; edits audio and visual recordings for broadcast; creates a variety of presentations with embedded audio and visual components.
