Summary
Serves as a clinical pharmacist providing direct pharmaceutical care for patients within the Indian Health Service. This position is the major source of pharmaceutical clinical information and is expected to manage selected patients with chronic disease states, as well as provide pharmaceutical care for acute patients.
Duties- Interpret and dispense prescribed products, reviewing labeling for directions and precautions to ensure proper protection of prescribed products to the patient.
- Provide specialized services to assist patients with managing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses.
- Provide information and advice about drug therapy, usage, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
- Maintain records such as pharmacy files, patient records, inventories, and control records for narcotics or controlled drugs.
- Compound and dispense medications as prescribed by physicians, dentists, and other licensed practitioners, calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients.
- May serve as a pharmacy consultant and advisor to groups such as the Therapeutic Agents Committee, the Hospital Research Committee, and the Infection Control Committee.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- May be subject to a probationary period.
- Must pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Must have medical staff clinical privileges and maintain them; failure may result in removal from federal service.
- On‑call hours or standby duty may be required.
- Must successfully complete a federal background investigation within five (5) calendar days of issuance.
- Must meet financial suitability requirements, demonstrating financial responsibility and no significant unresolved obligations.
- Experience:
Experience must be demonstrated in dispensing medications, evaluating medication use patterns, providing administrative or consultative pharmacy services, planning and evaluating medication programs, establishing storage procedures, researching medical literature, and maintaining medication records. - Basic Requirements for pharmacists:
- Degree: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an equivalent accrediting body.
- Licensure:
Pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE); licensed to practice in a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory. - Medical Requirement:
Must be able to distinguish basic colors. - Experience:
Must have qualifications that demonstrate knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for the position.
- Basic Requirements for GS‑11 Grade Level:
- At least 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D., Pharm.
D., or equivalent doctoral degree.
- At least 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D., Pharm.
- Basic Requirements for GS‑12 Grade Level:
- In addition to GS‑11 requirements, at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level in the federal service performed in the private or public sector, including conducting hospital authorized outpatient pharmacy clinics, taking patient histories, monitoring treatment outcomes, evaluating medication regimens, and similar tasks.
- Must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Financial Suitability Requirement:
The position requires a review of the applicant's financial history as part of the personnel security and suitability determination. Applicants must demonstrate financial responsibility and satisfy all legal financial obligations prior to applying.
Opportunities for promotion to the GS‑12 grade level are at management's discretion and are not guaranteed.

Additional InformationFederal employees earn annual leave at a rate based on years served. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized with at least a 6‑month service agreement. The position may be covered by a bargaining unit.
