An exciting opportunity has become available for a Learning Support Assistant to join our highly successful Additional Learning Support team across Luton and Hemel Hempstead. This full‑time position requires you to support learners to access their education. Ideally you will have a Level 3 qualification and previous experience working with 16‑to‑19‑year‑olds and/or adults with a wide range of learning difficulties and disabilities.
Your focus will be supporting learners in the classroom and assisting teaching staff to meet the diverse needs of learners, as well as assisting with out‑of‑class support sessions. Some knowledge of EHCPs and the procedures associated with gathering information for annual review meetings is desirable.
An understanding of the specific educational needs of such students within an FE setting is desirable, but a proven enthusiasm for this area of work is essential for this exciting opportunity.
The Additional Learning Support team provides a range of support for students with a wide range of learning difficulties or disabilities to enable them to access the educational opportunities offered.
You must be able to work well within a team, cross‑college colleagues, and have the aptitude to work independently when required. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse range of students are essential. Keeping accurate records is vital. A pro‑active, resourceful, learner‑focused approach is required as you will be involved in creating individual support strategies and working collaboratively with curriculum‑based colleagues.
MainDuties and Responsibilities
- Supervise students under the oversight of teaching staff to assist in developing specialist skills and ensure safe working practices.
- Demonstrate correct use of equipment and handling of materials to students to develop their skills and maintain safety.
- Contribute to the supervision of student recreational activities and educational visits to provide a high‑quality student experience.
- Act as a role model for students by promoting high standards of conduct and behaviour.
- Supervise and maintain designated practical work areas, regularly checking to ensure efficient support to teachers and learners, cleanliness, and adherence to health and safety requirements.
- Check, maintain and repair equipment in accordance with College guidelines to ensure it is safe and ready for use when required.
- Prepare and construct equipment and materials for use by teaching staff and students to assist in the delivery of teaching and learning.
- Give technical advice to staff and students on the selection and use of equipment and materials for teaching and learning purposes and, where appropriate, prepare written technical guidelines.
- Operate a booking system to control the allocation and usage of equipment and resources for teaching and learning.
- Monitor and maintain stock levels of consumables and order supplies to ensure appropriate materials are available when needed to support the learning process.
- Maintain inventories of equipment in accordance with our procedures.
- Safely dispose of waste materials to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Undertake and maintain risk assessments for designated processes and ensure the implementation of agreed control measures and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment.
- Provide first aid in the event of an accident within the practical work area.
