OverviewThis position serves as the range maintenance and target repair specialist for the State Department of Military Affairs. It plans, prioritizes, and completes maintenance and operation of targets and target support systems using electronic and mechanical knowledge, and makes decisions that pertain to the MT Army National Guard Training Sites. The technician follows established safety protocols and SOPs for all units involved in live‑fire events and training, monitors surface danger zones, mitigates/prevents fire, identifies unexploded ordnance hazards, and performs first‑line responder activities.
Diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of equipment and firefighting apparatus used in range operations are performed, and the technician acts as the initial attack crew for wildland fires on MT Army National Guard training facilities. Additional duties include providing range support during on‑call or off‑duty hours, coordinating special projects, participating in ongoing training, safety, and educational programs, and performing a variety of administrative duties as assigned.
This position reports to the State Department of Military Affairs Range Maintenance Supervisor.
Travel is primarily between Fort Harrison and Limestone Hills, a training range located near Townsend, MT.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of welding processes, carpentry skills, and expertise in electronics and electrical repair.
- Ability to operate various vehicles, including 2‑speed and air‑brake equipped vehicles, and operate heavy equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with State and Federal employees and the public.
- Understanding of OSHA and state safety requirements, receiving appropriate training to operate equipment and performing all work safely.
- Knowledge of herbicide and pesticide use and application.
- Skill in the use of computers and desktop software; reading and interpreting plans, sketches, manufacturer instructions and schematics; and the ability to look up items from a code book, technical instructions, or manufacturer data to interpret them.
- Ability to learn and apply agency policy and procedures, follow written and verbal instructions, and perform work safely and efficiently.
- Maintaining regular communication with supervisor, resolving problems beginning at the lowest level and bringing them to supervisor’s attention when necessary.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Wildland Red Card, involving 3 days of classroom training, one field day and culminating with a 3‑mile, 45‑pound pack test completed in 45 minutes or less.
- Demonstrated ability to work and engage in diverse working environments within and outside the Department.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
Two years of work experience in welding, carpentry, and/or electronics and electrical repair fields. Ability to secure a CDL during the first 18 months of employment. A security clearance is required. Prior military experience is preferred.
Training Assignment May Be Considered.
