Writing and Literature Instructor (New) – The University of Montana, College of Business
Helena College, part of the University of Montana system, offers a dynamic, creative environment for full‑time faculty. This role is a tenure‑track Writing & Literature Instructor position for the Donaldson Campus, beginning August 2026 for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Position OverviewFaculty at Helena College are professional educators committed to providing exceptional learning experiences in alignment with the College’s mission and policies. The Writing & Literature Instructor serves as teacher, mentor, and facilitator, helping students advance their educational pathways.
Key Responsibilities- Teach gateway gateway writing and introductory literature courses such as WRIT 101 College Writing I, WRIT 122 Intro to Business Writing, WRIT 121 Intro to Technical Writing, and LIT 110 Introduction to Literature.
- May teach additional courses: WRIT 201 College Writing II, LIT 211 American Literature II, LIT 213 Montana Literature, LIT 230 World Literature Survey, CRWR 212 Introduction to Nonfiction Workshop, and CRWR 240 Introduction to Creative Writing Workshop.
- Instruction of 30–32 credits per academic year (typically 5 courses per semester).
- Maintain a regular on‑campus presence and build relationships with students, colleagues, and transfer partners.
- Ensure effective instruction through student evaluation, learning outcome assessment, and departmental and institutional planning.
- Maintain accessible course materials and utilize Canvas LMS for gradebook and instructional purposes.
- Participate in professional development and college service activities.
- Course preparation, including creation of accessible course materials and management of assignments and grades in Canvas.
- Curriculum development and design at course and program level.
- Student learning assessment at both course and program level.
- Use varied teaching methods (lecture, group discussion, case studies, etc.).
- Collaborate with full‑time and adjunct faculty within the program.
- Participate in institutional functions such as college committees, student clubs, internships, recruitment, budget development, program promotion, and collaboration with academic and student affairs.
- Engage in professional development and improvement activities in teaching and the discipline.

- Use interpersonal and communication skills to establish strong working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Employ effective teaching strategies to enhance student success using evidence‑based techniques, technology, curriculum evaluation, and outcomes assessment.
- Seek opportunities for continuous improvement and collaboration in diverse settings.
- Master’s degree in English, Writing, Literature, or related field (equivalent education and experience considered).
- Maintain a regular physical presence on the Helena College Donaldson campus.
- Doctoral degree in English, Writing, Literature, or related field.
- Prior teaching experience at the 2‑year college level (two years preferred).
- Experience teaching online and using an LMS (Canvas, Moodle, D2L, etc.) and educational technology.

Work ScheduleThe regular work week is Monday‑Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, with flexibility to meet program needs. Obligations include four days prior to classes, extending two days after commencement ceremonies.
