Writing and Literature Instructor
Helena College, a comprehensive two‑year college in the University of Montana system, seeks a full‑time tenure‑track Writing and Literature Instructor for the Donaldson campus. The position will begin in August 2026 for the 2026‑2027 academic year.
The instructor will be part of the Written Communications and Humanities departments and will be responsible primarily for teaching gateway writing and introductory literature courses.

- CRWR 212 – Introduction to Nonfiction Workshop
- CRWR 240 – Introduction to Creative Writing Workshop
- Teach lecture courses in face‑to‑face, blended, online, and virtual formats.
- Maintain a regular on‑campus presence to build relationships with students, colleagues, and transfer partners.
- Teach 30‑32 credits per academic year (typically five courses per semester). School responsibilities include student evaluation, learning‑outcome assessment, and departmental and institutional planning.
- Maintain accessible course materials and use Canvas LMS for gradebook and instructional purposes.
- Participate in professional development and college service activities.
- Review the Helena Teachers’ Union CBA for full‑time faculty responsibilities.
- Instruction of 30‑32 credits per academic year in face‑to‑face, blended, online, or virtual formats.
- Course preparation, including accessible materials and Canvas LMS grading.
- Curriculum development and design at the course and program level.
- Assessment of student learning and program outcomes.
- Use diverse teaching methods to enhance understanding.
- Collaborate with full‑time and adjunct faculty.
- Participate in institutional functions such as committees, student clubs, recruitment, budget development, and program promotion.
- Engage in professional development and improvement activities.
- Commitment to Helena College’s mission, vision, and goals.
- Create an inclusive learning environment that values differences.
- Use interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships.
- Apply evidence‑based teaching strategies, technology, curriculum evaluation, and outcome assessment.
- Be willing to adapt for continuous improvement in diverse settings.
- Hold a master’s degree in English, Writing, Literature, or a related field (alternate combination of education and experience considered).
- Maintain a regular physical presence on the Donaldson campus.
- Doctoral degree in English, Writing, Literature, or related field.
- Prior teaching at the two‑year college level (two years preferred).
- Experience teaching online and using a Learning Management System such as Canvas, Moodle, or D2L.
All new employees must be eligible to work lawfully in the United States. This position does not sponsor visas.
The regular work week is a five‑day week, typically Monday‑Friday, 8 am–5 pm. Teaching obligations extend from four days before the first day of classes to two days after graduation ceremonies. Refer to the Helena Teachers’ Union CBA, section 4.8, for full‑time faculty responsibilities.
