The Press Secretary supports the Governor’s communications team in delivering a clear, consistent, and compelling message to the people of Montana. This role works closely with the Communications Director, Deputy Communications Director, Creative and Digital Director, and Special Projects Coordinator to ensure the Governor’s priorities are effectively communicated across all platforms and throughout all 56 counties. The Press Secretary travels frequently with the Governor, serving as a key on-the-ground communications lead during public events, media engagements, and community visits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft press releases, media advisories, talking points, speeches, and op-eds that reflect the Governor’s voice and policy agenda.
- Travel extensively with the Governor, supporting media coordination, press logistics, and message delivery during the 56 County Tour and other statewide events.
- Serve as a liaison to local media outlets, coordinating interviews, managing press access, and ensuring accurate coverage of the Governor’s initiatives.
- Assist in preparing the Governor for media interviews, press conferences, and public appearances.
- Respond to media inquiries in coordination with senior communications staff.
- Collaborate with the Creative and Digital Director to capture and distribute compelling content from the road, including photos, videos, and social media posts.
- Work with the Special Projects Coordinator to align communications efforts with event logistics and ensure seamless execution of the Governor’s 56 County Tour and other outreach initiatives.
- Support the planning and execution of press events, including site logistics, media outreach, and message coordination.
- Maintain updated media contact lists, press kits, and background materials.
- Reports directly to the Communications Director, who sets overall strategy and message priorities.
- Works closely with the Deputy Communications Director to align messaging, coordinate press logistics, and ensure seamless execution of communications plans.
- Partners with the Creative and Digital Director to ensure visual and digital storytelling aligns with the Governor’s message.
- Coordinates with the Special Projects Coordinator to integrate communications planning with event logistics and statewide outreach efforts.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, political science, public relations, or a related field.
- 2–4 years of experience in political communications, media relations, journalism, or public affairs.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently, including overnight trips and extended hours.
- Familiarity with Montana’s political landscape and rural communities is strongly preferred.
- Experience with social media strategy and digital content creation is a plus.
- Professionalism, discretion, ability to work with a team, and a commitment to public service are essential.
This is a fast-paced role that requires adaptability, initiative, and a strong work ethic. The Press Secretary must be comfortable working with the Special Projects Coordinator and the Creative Director on the road while maintaining close coordination with the senior members of the communications team in Helena.
