Pharmacy Technician
Overview
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, Supervisor, and/or Director of Pharmacy Services, performs a variety of technical and delivery duties for the retail pharmacies. Responsible to maintain confidential reports, enter and retrieve data utilizing the computer system, procure and fill requests for pharmaceutical supplies and deliver pharmaceuticals and other supplies to patients.
Responsibilities Essential Functions- Assist in filling patient medications with the correct medication from computer labels prior to each delivery.
- Confirm correct patient medications are selected for delivery.
- Delivers patient medications. Reports unusual occurrences to the pharmacists.
- Collects payments from patients as required.
- Reorders pharmacy supplies as needed.
- Bills patient medications by use of the computer charging system or the remote charging system.
- Maintains pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion.
- Generates reports and labels to compile and arrange a work list for the delivery of medications.
- Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe their responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job‑related hazards.
- Follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter‑ and intra‑departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Assists non‑pharmacy individuals with pharmacy functions and supplies.
- Answers the telephone and directs calls to appropriate pharmacy staff.
- Assists in the performance of ongoing quality assurance to assess the operation of the Department.
- Assists in monthly inspections of medication storage areas.
- Assists in inventory control and maintains adequate supplies necessary for the daily operation of the Department.
- May be required to receive drug orders, verify contents of orders against packing slips and purchase orders.
- Unpacks merchandise and restocks shelves.
- Notifies the pharmacist or Director of problems with stock levels and inventory supplies.
- Assists in the training of other personnel.
- Contributes to the enhancement of pharmacy services through suggestions for improvements in unit dose drug distribution systems.
- Deviates from daily routine when necessary to prepare and process any new medication orders.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Minimum Work ExperienceSix to 12 months of pharmacy experience preferred
Required Licenses/CertificationsRegistration with the Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician (Kentucky and West Virginia) or technician trainee (West Virginia only)
OtherNo history of alcoholism, drug addiction or indiscriminate use of habit forming or dangerous drugs.
No felony/criminal record.
