BASIC FUNCTION
Under the general direction of the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Theater Manager or assigned supervisor, the Performing Arts Center Theater Technician oversees all technical functions of the PAC, including sound, lighting, set design and construction. The Theater Technician will support the PAC Theater Manager in the use and maintenance of the PAC and other district facilities for event specific needs, assists in coordinating the use of PAC facilities for internal and external users;
collaborates with other district departments regarding specific technical needs for productions and events, oversees, and directs theater staff and volunteers.
- Acts as liaison with event organizers and staff to arrange details for technical needs for rehearsals and performances.
- Works with PAC manager to arrange for technical equipment maintenance and inspects equipment regularly.
- Advises production managers, lighting, sound and stage designers, on the technical specifications, cost and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows, oversees the implementation of approved technical designs to ensure productions meet specified technical requirements.
- Works with PAC Theater Manager to assist technical staff for performances and events.
- Attends technical rehearsals, in order to oversee and assist in the technical aspects of the production and to ensure appropriate use of equipment.
- Oversees and assists with set and stage construction to ensure a safe and high quality set.
- Assists the PAC Theater Manager in preparing and managing production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies to meet production needs within a specified budget.
- Develops a base list of supplies and equipment that will be regularly stocked and maintained.
- Maintains working inventory of basic technical equipment and supplies and orders replenishments as needed.
- Designs, configures, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for productions and other events and projects; assists guest designers with technical matters.
- Assists the PAC Theater Manager in determining the technical supports necessary for events and productions presented at the facility in advance of production dates and staffs appropriately to contract specifications.
- Operates and maintains the technical assets of the theater, including supervising the use of lighting, sound communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities to ensure longevity and safety of equipment.
- Informs PAC users of safety, technical aspects and other areas of facility operations; facilitates the use of the technical facilities by the renter/user in compliance with contracts and safety regulations.
- Recommends purchases of technical equipment to the PAC Theater Manager to or HUSD Business Services Team ensure current and updated technical equipment inventory.
- Works with teachers and students collaboratively to ensure event technical needs are met.
- Confers with PAC Theater Manager, site and district administrative staff, teachers, community group representatives, professional entertainers, event planners, and others regarding technical needs and equipment availability.
- Drafts, and oversees proper lighting, sound, rigging, and staging for a wide variety of performances; may make minor repairs and/or assist with construction to sets, scenery, and props, as needed; monitors the cleanliness and general appearance of the PAC or designated facility; oversights and provides technical training, advice, and support to users regarding theatrical lighting, sound, and staging applications.
- Oversees operations of lights, sound, and other equipment during rehearsals and productions, and operates as needed.
- Prepares, recommends and implements guidelines related to the use and operation of the PAC’s technical equipment.
- Assists the PAC Theater Manager to prepare and manage the PAC’s technical portion of the annual budget.
- Reads, interprets, and applies applicable District policies, codes, environmental and safety regulations.
- Instructs staff and volunteers in work and safety procedures, including the proper operation and minor maintenance of facilities and equipment (e.g. lighting, sounds, stage, data, and seating).
- Receives, inspects and arranges for the proper storage of theater technical equipment; maintains records of and conducts periodic inventories of such equipment.
- Assists in resolving production and facility technical usage concerns.
- Assist and collaborate with theater operations staff, student workers, and community volunteers to provide technical production support including the proper cleaning, repair, operation, and storage of sound, lighting and staging equipment.
