Summary
American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking two members to contribute to landscape stewardship and historic preservation projects at Pu'ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site.
Position OverviewUnder guidance from NPS Resource Management, Cultural Resources & Trail Crew staff, ACE members will learn traditional skillsets in historic preservation and cultural landscape restoration. Focus areas include traditional dry-set masonry, restoration of native coastal lowland species, and native pili grasslands within the Cultural Landscape. Members will work with park partners, learn about indigenous knowledge systems, and contribute to outreach, education, and interpretive projects.
ScheduleMonday through Thursday, 6:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Position Benefits Living AllowanceThe ACE Member is expected to work 40 hours per week and will receive a living allowance of $800 per week, disbursed bi‑weekly.
Housing Allowance$250 per week ($1,000 per month) is available for housing.
Professional Development Stipend$1,000 for pre‑approved professional development activities.
Training & OrientationParticipants receive position‑specific training, including OSHA‑10 and Introduction to Preservation Horticulture, and an orientation covering ACE policies, prohibited activities, and support networks.
Qualifications Required- U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident (as required by U.S. government contracts).
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Age 18‑30 (up to 35 for U.S. veterans).
- Positive representation of ACE and partner organization.
- Self‑directed and team‑oriented.
- Valid completion of hiring procedures.
- Pass required criminal history checks.
- Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Completion of required timesheets, feedback forms, and evaluations.
- Adherence to the Member Service Agreement.
- Independent and collaborative work style.
- Strong interest in historic preservation, traditional trades, preservation horticulture, and/or the environment.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, and manual dexterity; may require stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs or crouching.
- Vision: close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception required, with ability to focus.
- Weight lifted: up to 30 lbs routinely, 50 lbs occasionally.
- Environmental: outdoor and indoor work, often in dry, arid conditions; weather may be adverse.
- Noise: moderate to high (e.g., chainsaws, power tools).
- Travel: domestic travel to other NPS sites on Hawai‘i Island.
May encounter extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, wetlands, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Safety protocols will be provided on a case‑by‑case basis.
Vehicle and Equipment Use/SafetyNPS or ACE will provide a vehicle if required. Tools and PPE will be supplied by NPS. Strict adherence to safety training and protocols is mandatory.
