Job Description: Special Instructor/Special Education Teacher

Location: Honolulu, HI  (in office and field)

United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii is seeking a full-time Special Education Teacher to join a multidisciplinary team. The role involves supporting and providing services for children from birth to age 3 with developmental delays or disabilities. Services are delivered in the child’s natural environment, such as their home, daycare, or other community settings, primarily in the Honolulu area as part of Hawaii’s Early Intervention Services (EI/EIS).

• The design of learning environments and activities that promote the infant’s or toddler’s acquisition of skills in developmental areas including cognitive processes and social interaction.
• Curriculum planning including the planned interaction of personnel, materials, and time and space that leads to achieving the outcomes in the child’s IFSP.
• Providing families with information, skills, and support related to enhancing the skills development of the child in a variety of developmental areas, including cognitive processes and social interaction.
• Working with the child and family to enhance the child’s development.
• Conduct a Multidisciplinary Development Evaluation (MDE) to determine initial Part C Eligibility and/or to identify present levels of development. The MDE includes an evaluation of the child’s present level of functioning in each of the developmental areas: cognition, physical (including vision and hearing), communication, social or emotional, and adaptive, and also includes a review of pertinent records related to the child’s current health status and medical history.
• Function as a Primary Service Provider (PSP) to serve as the liaison between the family and other team members in order to support all outcomes and objectives in the child’s Individualized Family Support Plan (IFSP) by utilizing coaching practices and receiving support from Consultants who represent the identified areas of need in order to support the child’s family to strengthen their abilities in promoting the child’s learning and development within daily routines and activities.
• Function as a Consultant by utilizing coaching practices to support the PSP, parents, and other caregivers, to strengthen their abilities and build their capacity in promoting the child’s learning and development within daily routines and activities.
• Participate in the IFSP meetings and other meetings (Family Support Team, Joint Visit Planning, Transition meeting) regarding the child’s progress.

Special Instructors shall minimally have a Bachelor’s in Special Education (SPED) from an accredited program or equivalent: no Hawaii license.

• Degree in Elementary Education (Bachelor’s and Master’s) with a focus on early Childhood or Special Education.
• Degree in Early Childhood (Bachelor’s and Master’s) and shall have successfully passed at least one course in behavioral management with minimum grade of a “C”.
• 5th Year Teaching Certification with a focus on Early Childhood or Special Education.
